You know what gets me? Whenever they show a "Smurf"--you know, for the
purpose of showcasing the Smurfs--it is always just a "generic" smurf
(blue, shirtless, with the floppy white hat). But when we watch the
show, we see that *each* smurf has a very specific and identifiable
idiosyncrasy or visual characteristic: "Brainy" has the glasses; "Handy"
    has the pencil behind the ear; "Vanity" has the gay flower on his hat;
"Greedy" has the chef's hat...you get the point. NONE of the Smurfs
that we know and love look like a "generic" Smurf. They each have a
specific look that distinguishes them from the other Smurfs. Papa Smurf
has the beard and the red suit; Smurfette is a girl (ostensibly the
*only* girl, but that's another post); you get the point.

So what I want to know is: who are all these generic Smurfs with no
distinguishing personalities that we never see, but are apparently the
representatives of the Smurf community? It's like Nazi propaganda: keep
showing the image of a handsome, young blond kid--despite the fact that
    we're mostly dark-haired, overweight, hook-nosed, maybe
dark-skinned...you get the point--and you convey the message that
    we--Oh, hey, what the???

I just incited Godwin's Law in a discussion about the Smurfs. Oh, man.
I've got to rethink this whole Usenet thing. That's it. Goodbye
    forever. Last Post Ever.

    Love,
    Wavy G

The smurfs live in a socialist dictatorship. This is a well known fact
that has seen wide circulation on the internet. It's not too
dissimilar to the pre-fall Soviet Union. The only real debate comes
when one considers who, exactly, was the dictator? Papa smurf, a
loveable Lenin (who looks like Marx) or Gargamel, a ruthless Stalin-
esque figure? Of course there is always the theory that the smurf
village was a successful utopian commune, and Gargamel represents the
    Wests bloodthirsty crush of Capitalism.

In which case, I'd have to compare Gargamel to that slut Ayn Rand.
