First, you really need to read the story. You are so obviously uninformed as to what happened.
Secondly,no, he will never recover. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic.
http://www.alcoholichelpnow.com/articles/alcoholic-cure.php I realize it can be controlled, but you are still an alcoholic. And recidivism rates run somewhere between 25 and 95%.

I think I'll just let this non-issue thread die along with the two idiots championing it.

Well, all I can say is that the "three martini lunch crowd" and Lehigh ought to be celebrating, if this is true.

Just an input on a quick look for data:

Some evidence indicates that almost 90 percent of alcoholics are likely to experience at least one relapse over the initial 4-year period following treatment. Although a major government study done in 2002 with over 4,000 recovering alcoholics showed that 18.2% were still sober after a year.

    http://www.utahstories.com/Feb10-alcoholism-in-utah-0216.html

That would mean over 80% of alcoholics relapsed in the first year. Maybe alcoholics aren't the best people to have driving professionally. Maybe in the real world, job retraining opportunities might be a better idea than suing to keep them as drivers.

That is what happened in this case and it was the company's policy to give them a desk job as available - part time but with benes. And they are still suing the company. I am not exactly sure just what else they could have done except to put them back on the road. But then we would all have to get off the road.

You poor disabled man. Have you thought about trying to get a job with the Secret Service or as a Presidential driver? Sounds like it might be the perfect career path.

Maybe he should look into aviation. Drinking is all the rage with pilots. :D

I was wondering who would connect with that slow pitch :) Not that the Divine Ms P would have much to worry about from me in that regard.

When I fly drinking is all the rage with me too. In fact most of the drinking I do is probably at 30,000 ft. I hate flying. But our rail service isn't that great and just try finding an ocean liner that goes from the West Coast to Tokyo or Hong Kong so we're stuck with it I guess.

I've been meaning to ask about that. Is everything well with your family and friends in Japan? I probably shuldn't ask in a thread, but, eh... lol

...as for flying... I've taken a 5 minute helicopter tour for $20. Never been on a plane and doubt I could sit still long enough, or be complacent long enough, to make it on board... security would probably keep their eyes on me 'cause I'd be fidgeting, mostly out of boredom... lol

...I guess I could get gloriously drunk beforehand. It wouldn't settle me down or make me more complacent (pretty much the opposite) ...but I'd have more fun getting arrested LOL

...Yeah, maybe I should stay home...

All is well, assuming that there are no serious ill effects from drinking a little radio active water or ingesting some glow-in-the-dark veggies. Except for a cousin who lives not all that far from the glow zone everyone is in Tokyo. Thank you for asking :) As for planes, what can you do? That latest news is that many new pilots really don't know how to fly all that well. They are mainly trained to operate the systems that at least in theory do know how to fly. When those systems fail, the guys in the cockpit are presumably reduced to digging around for the owner's manual. One more reason for another glass of wine.

And yes, I am prepared to accept the consequences of my own alcohol abuse if anything ever happens.

I don't drink and drive. I was thinking more about a personal health issues, how it affects a romantic relationships, or it's affect on my job performance.
