You have a bloody long long long way to go before you become anything like the old East Germany or any of the other old Sov block countries. But I will bet that some will run with this LOL

 

It's out in the open now, and citizens in this country may make a big enough stink about it to demand a vote on whether or not to continue the program.

Unlikely, at least in the short-term, but not impossible.

Here's your choices:

Continue with the program and accept the new limitations on privacy enacted by the Jr. administration and continued by the Obama administration, indefinitely.

...or...

Abandon the program and accept that more "terrorist"-type attacks will happen in our major cities than would under the program.

Make your choice.

I don't live in any major city, and rarely visit any, or go anywhere really, so my chance of being killed by a bomb or gun massacre are as near to zero as you can get.

That said, I choose to continue with the program for several reasons:

Because privacy has already been eroded to the point that the extra information the government gets about me is insignificant.

Because people who live, work, or visit larger cities are at a greater risk of losing their lives should the program be abandoned.

Because corporations and hackers can get the same info from me with little to no effort.

With corporations, they have you "agree" to it, using shyster methods. With hackers, they simply know how to bypass our computers firewall and other protections...depending on the person's skills, of course.

I admit that I did not support the Patriot Act when it was first enacted under the Jr. administration, the phone-taps (of Americans and foreigners alike) in particular annoyed me.

It''s a bit hypocritical for me to say I support the program now, but I do have several reasons. One in particular is that I simply don't trust Cheney, Jr., or Rumsfeld to behave...where Obama has added protections against those concerns.

Still, I don't like the idea of being "spied" on, as I value my privacy more than most people (believe it or not, I don't care either way lol) . Yet, the second I went online back in the 90's I knew my privacy had dwindled.

At this point in time, computers are gathering information from us with every site we visit, every form we fill out online (and somewhat offline), what we write, what we look at onscreen, etc. and those issues will only become worse as time goes on.

Eventually, most previously private information about ourselves, hospital records, all manners of government records, etc will be easily accessible to almost anyone. At this point, only small groups of people actually have that access, or can gain it.

Add surveillance cameras to the mix (as it's already here, as you've noted previously) and any real privacy outside your home is non-existent anyway. Nearly everyone in America carries a cell-phone capable of recording images and sound, so even a trip to the beach....smelling of spam...can be recorded.

In the 80's, the last decade before cell-phones became popular, I saw this as inevitable, and now it's here. Someone owes me five bucks, but I didn't have a cell-phone back then (or now) to record it properly and I forgot who it was exactly. Oh well.

iqless has proven himself to be exactly what we envision when we think of low information Obama zombies...he was against the Patriot Act when it was Bush's idea but supports it now that BO is in charge. What could be more stupid than that? Gotta hand it to you iqless, you are brave guy to keep posting given that fog-of-war is away!

 

There may be eyes everywhere these days, but there's still only a few hundred brains behind them. People still seem to think we live in some sci-fi world where every tidbit of information gathered is analyzed and scrutinized and processed, when in fact, there isn't the computing power to do so. If we had a Death Star sized super computer that did nothing but process info gathered daily, it wouldn't be possible to "watch" everyone. People have a self-importance about them that transcends reality. Nobody is watching you because nobody cares. We don't live in a comic book.

 

I agree, I just meant that the information can be analyzed in one way or another, by a determined individual or group targetting specific people.

The truth is, few people want to listen to teenagers talking, much less viewing their text-messages...except for perverts...or if the person is a celebrity, politician, chairman of the board, etc.

The truth is, there's way too much info produced to target EVERYone, except for marketing and such.

 

With these recent IRS revelations and BO's penchant for attacking his political opponents, who really knows what this admin might do with the info they gather?
