What do you think about those football (soccer) tags that are now on German Ebay? Those tags were used to draw the teams into what pool they will go into for next year's World Cup of Football.Fifa are far from impressed & have threatened legal action against the 31 year old vendor. The vendor has been offered 10,000 Euros for the 'Germany' football tag alone! He was only planning to make a few hundred Euros.I reckon that the guy should be within his rights to sell them on Ebay. After all, they were biffed out into a rubbish bin.So I don't see why Fifa are jumping up & down.

What do you think of this? Your views please.

Well I don't know what the laws are regarding this in other countries, but in the US it has pretty much been established that throwing something away is abandoning all claims to it, once it is in a publicly accessible area. Personally I think other countries should adopt similar laws... if it was thrown away it should become "finders keepers."

Heh :) But it must be important enough for parts of the British press to call the World Cup a "Britskrieg". Oh well, guess that some in the UK are still at war. As for those tags or test tags or whatever, yeah, who cares. If somebody is willing to pay 50,000 or 100,000 for one such piece of paper - be my guest ...

Hey, be nice with them ... at least as long as they have not bought or paid their World Cup tickets yet. :D

Christian (from a city where the local football team is third league while the local ice hockey team is first league, hehe)

Pardon my ignorance, but exactly what is a "tag" and/or what part do they play in the game of "Fussball" as it is evidently called in Germany?

'Fussball' is the German word for 'football' or soccer to some people.

That is the result of what the FIFA said - as I wrote, they claim that the "tags" are not the ones actually used for the official drawing. Seems that the seller then canceled all his old auctions, and started fresh ones. This one for example http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7206692613 is currently at €14,000 or so.

He now specifically says in the description that he does not know whether these are the original lots or the ones in some test drawing. Also, the new auction (there will be others later, it seems) is by invitation only; you have to contact the seller first.

In an article about this I read that he never expected to get an awful lot for these but that he is quite upset about how the FIFA first reacted. Yes, the trashcan was not in a publicly accessible area, but what the heck ...

Usually none, but this is the Football World Cup. :) Which national teams can participate had been decided before, in some "qualification" rounds. Now the question was which team will play against whom during the actual championship. That was done in some kind of lottery on 9 December (shown live on TV in 150 or so countries), where the name tags - hence the term - of all teams were in some box.

Then some celebrities drew the team names. Now we know that Germany, for example, will play against Costa Rica, Poland and Ecuador in the first round ...

Thank you for the explanation of the term "tag" and what it was used for. This makes it sound as if the organizing committee uses multiple drawings, and then uses the one that they feel the best about.
Sure wish they would decide this by some other method, as it leaves too much to the immagination.

I suspect that the tags are the real ones. It's hard to imagine they needed a test set. More likely, the authorities are just lying and exhibiting the centuries old European tradition of making sure that nobody makes any money.

Yes, I think so too. And of course there were no multiple drawings, just one. Another reason to not quite buy that "test tags" thing ...

What "authorities", pray tell, are you referring to?

In this case, FIFA. In Europe and most of the rest of the world, someone is always 'in charge.' There are few unregulated aspects of life. Unfortunately for the people there, they never understood the difference between liberty and permission. Unfortunately, the people in the USA are forgetting the difference. This is only my opinion and observation. It does not require a response.

No offensive to the homosexual community but "fussball" sounds a bit "gay" to me.

But then again what is soccer anyway but a bunch of men dressed in shorts and running around a field chasing a ball as they shake the sweat off their butts as they bumb into each other and grinding it out so they could get a kick.

Oh well, so FIFA is an "authority" (they would certainly be pleased about being turned into one by some Americans), and football is "gay" (just don't let the hetero male and female football players know about this). By the way, it's "Fußball" in German - and that first syllable sounds like "foos". Now I don't want to be fussy here, but Fuß has about as much to do with fuss as, say, a Puff has to do with a puff. :D

Look lets just ban the bloody game then we can get on with real life :rolling: and the way most of them act would bring a blush to the most daring of drama queens :)
