The US Congress is getting all upset over the amazing discovery that those
so-called "boot camps", set up to deliberately inflict harsh treatment on
    "troubled teens", abuse teens.

You really have to wonder if there shouldn't be an IQ test for Congress.

    If not voters.

    And prospective parents.

They (the people that were to protect my grandson) wanted to send him to
bootcamp. I said NO and that was that. As bad as he is sometimes I knew that
sending him there would only increase his anger.

It's "hydrotherapy" and "electrotherapy" and "shock" and "aversion"
"therapy" and "psychosurgery" and not abuse or torture; it's "pain
compliance technique" in arrest and not abuse or torture; it's "teen boot
camp" and not abuse or torture; it's "enhanced interrogation" and not
    abuse or torture . . . .

    "Rectification of names" indeed.

Nothing so illuminates the end as the means.

And the means is frequently the real end.

These camps have received glowing reviews and have wide political
support. They're a real moneymaker for the operators. Many are
closely connected to religious organizations, if not run by them.

A little investigating leads to a sick feeling in one's stomach -
    these bastards are protected.

Generating a population of the abused and frightened has a purpose in

On the plus side, we should get a nice crop of nicely radicalized
surviving kids out of it under no illusions about the morals of those
    involved.

The basic idea behind Newspeak was to remove all shades of meaning
from language, leaving simple dichotomies (pleasure and pain,
happiness and sadness, good thoughts and thoughtcrimes) which
reinforce the total dominance of the State. Similarly, Newspeak root
words served as both nouns and verbs, which allowed further reduction
in the total number of words; for example, "think" served as both noun
and verb, so the word "thought" was unneeded and could be abolished. A
staccato rhythm of short syllables was also a goal, further reducing
the need for deep thinking about language. (See duckspeak.) Successful
Newspeak meant that there would be fewer and fewer words --
dictionaries would get thinner and thinner.

In addition, words with opposite meanings were removed as redundant,
so "bad" became "ungood." Words with comparative and superlative
meanings were also simplified, so "better" became "gooder", and "best"
likewise became "goodest". Intensifiers could be added, so "great"
became "plusgood", and "excellent" or "splendid" likewise became
"doubleplusgood." Adjectives were formed by adding the suffix "-ful"
to a root word (e.g. "goodthinkful", orthodox in thought), and adverbs
by adding "-wise" ("goodthinkwise", in an orthodox manner). In this
manner, as many words as possible were removed from the language. The
ultimate aim of Newspeak was to reduce even the dichotomies to a
single word that was a "yes" of some sort: an obedient word with which
everyone answered affirmatively to what was asked of them.

They also sought to drop unapproved words completely from the language, so
there wouldn't even be the words to express forbidden thoughts . . . .

Perpetually rewriting the classics in it as it was perpetually devolved
    was a perpetual challenge.

Newspeak was inspired at least in part by the simplified form of English
(for use in ESL) called "Basic English" (a little over eight hundred
    words, IIRC).

Well, the evidence presented didn't allow a criminal conviction,
    apparently (dueling pathologists).

There'll be a civil case, with a more relaxed standard of evidence, a la
"OJ I-B", if in fact the insurance company for the "boot camp" doesn't
settle out of court, which seems likely.

And the "boot camp" in question has long been shut down, which itself
should have a salutary "chilling" effect on the others still operating.

(Also, jurors count as "voters", really.)

As noted above, though, I have a problem with the concept that if the boy
hadn't died then the treatment being dealt out there to "troubled
    teens" would be OK otherwise . . . .

I don't believe in this "break people down to build them up" thing
they're doing. IMO, some can't be built up again after they've been
broken down, so it's a dangerous thing to do.

I had heard so many horror stories about boot camp and group homes that I
just could not send him there. I read that when adopting a child try to get
one that is under 5 years of age because whatever damage was done had a
better chance of being undone before that age. In actuallity that is what we
did, we *adopted* our grandchildren. It has been a long road, but come this
June (graduation) both grandkids are making plans to move on so our job will
    be over.

Notice these pretended "techniques" flourish best where the "subject
population" has no say in the matter, schools, mental hospitals, jails and
    prisons, the military . . . .
