Similarly, Newspeak root words served as both nouns and verbs, which allowed further reduction in the total number of words; for example, "think" served as both noun and verb, so the word "thought" was unneeded and could be abolished. A staccato rhythm of short syllables was also a goal, further reducing the need for deep thinking about language. (See duckspeak.) Successful Newspeak meant that there would be fewer and fewer words -- dictionaries would get thinner and thinner. In addition, words with opposite meanings were removed as redundant, so "bad" became "ungood." Words with comparative and superlative meanings were also simplified, so "better" became "gooder", and "best" likewise became "goodest". Intensifiers could be added, so "great" became "plusgood", and "excellent" or "splendid" likewise became "doubleplusgood." Adjectives were formed by adding the suffix "-ful" to a root word (e.g. "goodthinkful", orthodox in thought), and adverbs by adding "-wise" ("goodthinkwise", in an orthodox manner). In this manner, as many words as possible were removed from the language. The ultimate aim of Newspeak was to reduce even the dichotomies to a single word that was a "yes" of some sort: an obedient word with which everyone answered affirmatively to what was asked of them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspeak Politics and the English Language -george Orwell 1945 http://www.k-1.com/Orwell/index.cgi/work/essays/language.html > -- > tinmimu...@hotmail.com > > smeeter 11 or maybe 12 > > mp 10 > > mhm 29x13 > > Nothing so illuminates the end as the means. > > And the means is frequently the real end.- Hide quoted text - > > - Show quoted text -

Perpetually rewriting the classics in it as it was perpetually devolved was a perpetual challenge. Newspeak was inspired at least in part by the simplified form of English (for use in ESL) called "Basic English" (a little over eight hundred words, IIRC). Well, the evidence presented didn't allow a criminal conviction, apparently (dueling pathologists). There'll be a civil case, with a more relaxed standard of evidence, a la "OJ I-B", if in fact the insurance company for the "boot camp" doesn't settle out of court, which seems likely. And the "boot camp" in question has long been shut down, which itself should have a salutary "chilling" effect on the others still operating. (Also, jurors count as "voters", really.) As noted above, though, I have a problem with the concept that if the boy hadn't died then the treatment being dealt out there to "troubled teens" would be OK otherwise . . . . -- tinmimus99@hotmail.com smeeter 11 or maybe 12 mp 10 mhm 29x13 You want a job and a lizard to ride? < _The Einstein Intersection_

I had heard so many horror stories about boot camp and group homes that I just could not send him there. I read that when adopting a child try to get one that is under 5 years of age because whatever damage was done had a better chance of being undone before that age. In actuallity that is what we did, we *adopted* our grandchildren. It has been a long road, but come this June (graduation) both grandkids are making plans to move on so our job will be over. > > -- > > > . \ > /| | , , __ __. _ .- , . > / | ___ | / |' `. .' \ \,' | ` > /__| ___\ |-< | | | | /\ | | > @@ e\ / / \_ / | `._.' / \ `---|. > @@@ { / \___/ > @@.-<.-----__/ > / / ) )--./-/' knoxy > `.\) ( mhm34x10 > .>) \ smeeter #6 > / \ #6 on mimus wanted poster list > / | Best Newbie in alt.flame 2005 > J | Snarky's Gutter Chix0rz #13 > __`-._____/_\ ___________________________________________________ > ` made by VK knoxy@post.com
