You can't really add two ordinals.

For example, first place plus first place doesn't equal second place.

So ordinal addition must involve only one ordinal and at least one
    cardinal.

While preserving of course its different significance from cardinal
    addition.

I hope you've enjoyed this as much as I have.

This is, of course, excepting the fact that the very definition of an
ordinal number prohibits it from being used in any sort of
    mathematical equation, save for averages.

Unless there is a lot I don't know.

    Which there is.

it can be used in most statistical equations, although whats really
happening is its being translated into a different number space on a 1
    to 1 basis.

Okay, someone ran three races. In the first race they came in first. In
the second race, they also came in first. In the third race they came in
fourth. What is the everage position they came in? Add the ordinals,
    divide by the number.

You can add ordinals, it's just that the result is meaningless if not taken
in context and would usually be done in part of a lager formula. But
consider, all numbers are that way anyway. If you have 1 ball of clay and 1
ball of clay and you add them together you have 2, but 2 what? is it 2
balls of clay, or were they merged into one that is twice the mass? All
numbers need to be taken into context when used mathematically.
