I'm usually stuck liking ether the original or the rendition I'm familiar with but I gotta tell you I like them all when it comes to "Drift Away". This song sums up my life. Nothing gets me feeling better or uplifted than a good old rock an roll song. I grew up listing to Rod Stewart so it's on my top but I love Uncle kracker's version too so I put them first. The Dobie Gray version is the only version I like, none of the rest even compare. Drift Away used to be my favorite Karaoke song to sing. . .
Doodie Bros version is the one that sticks in my head. I'm not not one that normally likes redo's of old music. When that rap band did an Aerosmith song and my son told me about this new song that was all the rave I asked him to play it for me. It sucked and I pulled out my copy of it and said "boy, this is what that song is supposed to sound like". For the life of me I can't remember the song.
I have to agree, wholeheartedly, that Dobie Gray's version is much better. I will add, too, that it is timeless and some how eerily haunting about it. Kind of moves me. I play this on my mom's old piano. Good one to belt out after a few boilermakers.
It's one of those songs where, as soon as I read the lyrics, the tune just popped right into my head. (Sounds pretty good in an echo chamber )
Run DMC and Aerosmith did a version of Walk This Way, from the Toys in the Attic album. It's considered to be the first Rap/Rock collaboration. I like it but not as much as the original version. That's always been a pet peeve of mine. When someone would say that a cover version of a song is better than the original, I say that's impossible. I understand that someone could "like" a cover version of a song better, but unless the original artist says the cover is better, it can't be. The original version is what the song is meant to sound like, so a cover can't be "better".
I have to agree with you, IWS. Yet I am conflicted, because Johnny Cash knows that he covered the piss out of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage".
The first time I heard Drift Away it was on the Rod Stewart's Atlantic Crossing album while I was in the Navy. I thought it was his song so I'm parshal to his version all though I like all the versions except Bon Jovi. I was never big on Bon Jovi fan. And Ali I'm a loyal Beatles fan too!
You ARE???? You know what's fun? If you are ever in Vegas, go to the "Fab Four Mania" Beatles cover band. If you enjoy Beatles music, you will have a great time. "Paul" threw me a free t-shirt and "George" winked at me! (Probably because I was the only woman in the crowd under 60?...haha)
