No way. I think there is already enough social unrest in this country, if they started a draft, people would flip, and furthermore, most people would not support it, even far right wingers.

    1. well both active duty and reserve recruiters can't make their target numbers.
    2. The army is slowly loosing those that have been over to Iraq. When I left the Reserve in 1996 after 16 years, the rate of reserve units being called up was negatively over-powering the bennies offered to new recruits for schooling etc.
    3. One weekend a month and two weeks in the summer was gradually becoming two weekends a month (or 3 weekends in a month and a half) and 4-6 weeks of active duty.
    4. As of early mid 2004, they were not allowing soldiers to leave the service if called up. Those in Iraq were automatically extended for the duration.
    5. I know a 60 year old, that wasn't allowed to retire. Imagine the pains the Army is going through if they require 60 year olds to remain in.

I don't know.. if the war extends another year, I would just bet that the draft may become a reality. As for popularity, the draft has never been popular ever, has never stopped it from happening.

We have a technical armed force. Not only does it take a level of intelligence to function with the various military arms but years of practice and training to use them effectively in a unit, etc. A draft is not in the best interests of the military and most senior officers are against it for the above reason and for the reason who wants to command soldiers who do not want to be there, who do not have what it takes to be there and who would tend to resist orders.

However, if there is a nuclear explosion in one of our major cities then everything cited is out the window and who knows what measures would be put in place by both Democrats and Republicans.

I would support the draft. Military service would build character in a lot of these young adults (kids) who are out there voicing their far left or far right opinions right now. Might even get one of the Bush twins to act as a poster girl, LOL :D

Two years right out of Highschool would seem just about right.

I'd be screwed in the military. At 6'6 I'm a giant target, and I have had two disks removed from my back. I used to be in ROTC in college, but that was simply for fun : )

On the other hand, I think they would not put me in combat, as my mind would be a terrible thing for them to waste. I personally wouldn't support a draft, as I think people who didn't want to be there, would be more likely to die, amongst other reasons.

The United States will not reinstitute the military draft in this decade because military recruitment problems will go away when American troops start coming home in 2006. The returning soldiers will be very well-received, and young people will notice the public admiration and attention. A lot of the homecoming soldiers will have an attitude, self-confidence, a swagger. Their non-serving peers, friends, and relatives will notice the differences.

G.W. Bush will remain in office through 2008, and will not initiate the draft. The Democrats are making noise about a possible military draft now because it is very unpopular with the general public. They are hoping Bush will have to do it. This is similar to the "read my lips" scenario that G.H.W. Bush fell vistim to. The draft issue will be dropped as soon as Iraq settles down. Without the water-drip torture of ad infinitum announcements of military deaths, the military draft issue will evaporate and military recruitment will be resume at normal rates.

Military reservists have been impacted the most by the Iraq call-ups. Army reserves have had very little to do for three decades. For many National Guard reservists, the Army was a hobby. Nobody got shot, you had the opportunity to play with cool stuff, and you made a few bucks in the bargain. That changed with unit activations, vaccinations, camel spiders, and EIDs.

I think some form of national service would be very good for the Country, and good for young Americans. However, IMHO most young Americans are probably to be too fat, lazy, and ssoft to accept serious responsibilities like community or traditional military service.

Like it has been said, it would be dumb to initiate a draft right now. People are alltogether too opposed to it, and protesting would escalate to proportions not unlike those seen in Vietnam-era.

People may be opposed but it still would be in the best INTREST of the country. 2 years of non-combat (mandatory) duty for every high-school graduate. This could and would include security work at Federal Buildings and Airports freeing up national Guardsmen/women to deploy to HOT locations around the world.

Makes TOO much sense. I say GO FOR IT.

U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, the New York Democrat: "We've failed to convince our allies to send troops, we've extended deployments so morale is sinking, and the president is saying we can't cut and run. So what's left? The draft is a very sensitive subject, but at some point, we're going to need more troops, and at that point the only way to get them will be a return to the draft."

Charles Rangle is one of the many left wing liberals that I grew up hearing about on the local news all the time but even if I disagree with him on some keen issues he is a real representative of his district and not a phony race baiter darling of the left like the criminal Al Sharpton who is responsible for many deaths from riots he helped sparked in the past. Did I forget to also mention that Charles Rangle was also a real war hero from the Korean conflict. His record of service was one to respect unlike Kerry who served enough time to fill his resume and "doctored" the record of his service.

Andy respects Rangle? As for Kerry you are wrong, those boats were the toughest duty going in Vietnam.

Yeah, and Kerry won THREE, count 'em three, Purple Hearts! He deserves as much respect as the gum under my shoe.

I just hope for your sake's that your Goverment does not act in the moronic manner of my own by cutting troop numbers (Air/Army/Fleet) and amalgamating Regiments to be more 'Cost Effective' LOL They did this just prior to the Afghanistan episode  and now wonder why we dont realy have enough full time personel to fulfill all our obligations!!

Exactly, that is the exact reason why you have a draft, to bring in the smart brainy skilled guys hiding in the dress behind the desk. Although I wouldn't say you need years of practice with a specific piece of equipment. The NCO's should have those years, but the soldiers should be able to pick up that level of skill within a matter of weeks with rigorous training. Again thats why we draft the smart guys, we have no shortage the soldiers we are trying to avoid getting.

False, a draft is in the best interest of the military.
False, senior officers would love the draft. We won WWII, tied in Korea, and lost in Vietnam with the draft. The key word is "want" to be there. Nobody except Patton, MacArthur, and Westmoreland "wanted" to be there. The men knew it was important and whether drafted or volunteer did their duty with steadfast resolve.

OK.. am I for the draft NO, although i'm too old go now :). Is it in the best interest of the military .. YES. Is it in the best interest of the U.S. <shrug> probably not at this time, unless we want to see the U.S. start burning...

The American military has never been better than it is today. Highly skilled and motivated troops. I think the draft would be a disaster.

In fact, the Bush Administration has taken huge steps to modernize the Army in a way to reduce the number of troops and enhance their material assets and skills. The United States doesn't need a massive standing army. Leave such things to the Chinese dictators and others reliving the 20th Century. The future is with special forces, technology, and rapid response.
