I only believe killing is wrong when done in selfish ambition. The man who kills his wife so he can be with another woman. The drug dealer who wants to own the street. etc... As a serviceman I would justify it as "the greater good" in which being even if I disagree with the war I agree with the princables of honor and serving your country. Taking anothers life is not always murder. Murder is done for selfish ambition, war is for the ultimate good of the country and I believe God grants mercy to those who kill in defence of their self, home, & country... I think God justifies killing when it is not selfishly motivated

War is merely a real life game of chess. The pawns are sacraficed in order to get to the agenda of the king accomplished and as such the decsions made, right or wrong ultimatly land on his (the kings) back and he is responsible for the killing and death if his motivation for declaring war was wrong or unjustified...

Just my simple thoughts on the matter... Take it or leave it... Ultimately it comes down to what you believe. You can't go through life and living according to what everyone else believes. You have to decide for yourself.

Moen, did you see the light? I couldn't stand the fact that they expressed a 'they know best' arrogant attitude, especially in their attitudes in relation to marriage, divorce, bringing up children,& their dealings with people of decent-minded faith communities, especially Protestants,Jews & Muslims.

Their attitudes to women & their views on race relations proves how bigoted they really are.

It wasn't only me who left the Cult of Rome, but my family on my father's side as well.My grandparents like it when I tell what the Idiot of Rome has been up to.

Now to be fair Aidan remember that the RC church is the largest religion in the world (1 billion +) and there are many different approaches going on in the church (I am on the social justice side). What you are talking about is there, but it is not the only thing going on in the church.

True. But it's also very much a part of Christian ethics. As the theory is understood in the West, it was developed by Christian theologians.

If I were guiding a soldier/sailor, etc. through the original question (because it's a good one that shouldn't be demeaned with a simple "yes" or "no"), I would also explore the question, "do soldiers have to give an account for NOT killing when the occasion called for it?" because sinning can be done both by comission and omission.

Aiden it would be hard to give you an answer that would have much meaning for you given your attitude towards the Catholic Church and I'm affraid it would just add fuel to your irrational fire. The Catholic church may have perfected hypocrisy but by no means does it have a monopoly on it either.
I spent most of my early life in Catholic schools at the urging of my grandparents who were devout German Catholics. My parents didn't think all that much of Catholicism but they were under my grandparents thumb and after my grandparents died, my parents dumped Catholicism for other just as meanless religions. My mother even became a minister. You focus too much attention on one of the major offenders while completely missing that organized religion is just a scam no matter who is doing it. I'm not saying local churches of any denomination don't do their share of good work on a local level but they are hopelessly tied to and reinforcing the main sickness that they are organized under. You rail on about one corrupt institution out of the countless many that are out there and think you sound like you know what you are talking about. You've just exchanged one group of demons for another. You're still caught up in the stupidity lecturing the rest of us about one institution while you should be looking at them all. That is why you sound like a poor recording of a broken record and your message goes unheard.

All you've got to do is look at the ancient heritage of the majority of those who serve in military combat specialties, they come from warrior societies like the Native Americans, Celts, Greeks, etc. It's in our blood and has been for thousands of years. Some suppress this urge better than others...

Just 50 generations ago the Warrior was KING. You can't unbreed these hereditary genetics or cover them up completely with a 21st century lifestyle.

"God has a hard-on for marines because we kill everything we see! He plays His games, we play ours! To show our appreciation for so much power, we keep heaven packed with fresh souls! God was here before the Marine Corps! So you can give your heart to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the Corps! Do you ladies understand? "

Getting back to your original question there danr, I do beleive that in war for the people you kill you will be judged on the condition of your heart. Did you kill as your duty and only when essential or didi you enjoy the killing and seek out those to kill and revel in it. These are the questions you will be asked in my opinion.

I don't ever recall reading anyplace where being a good soldier was considered morally wrong. But if someone used their position as a soldier to kill or rape civilians or commit other atrocities, that would probably be something they would have to account for. I would think that the just war provisions would affect political leaders and high-ranking officers. The average man or woman who serves probably doesn't have enough information to be held accountable except in extreme cases, particularly when their government lies about the true causes for war.

Interesting take on the question. I hadn't considered the warrior instinct.

I think it is naive to believe that you can have "killing in your blood". You can be trained to be a good warrior but there certainly isn't anything floating around in your veins that would cause you to suddenly become a killing machine just because your ancestors were war-like. I suppose that you can have homicidal mental health issues that makes you kill for the sake of killing but you would have to believe that all good warriors are natural born homicidal maniacs in the first place and they just happen to have found their calling as a warrior. I think if you took the son of Genghis Khan and raised him in a pink room with rainbow ponies on the wall and soft music you'd end up with a pretty passive individual.

My observations indicate that some people are really genetically predisposed toward violence.
