Stuff like this is only the beginning, "In one 1992 tape, Saddam discusses the diversion of electric power from a massive plant in Basra for a uranium-enrichment process like one the U.S. used to create the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. In another tape, a top Iraqi scientist explains to Saddam how uranium is being enriched through the advanced process of plasma separation.

The tapes support the account of Mahdi Obeidi, who'd been in charge of the centrifuge program, that parts and blueprints were hidden from U.N. inspectors but not destroyed. Components of a gas centrifuge used to enrich weapons-grade uranium and documents relating to WMD were discovered in a barrel buried in Obeidi's backyard in a rose garden.

Details of the release of the tapes and documents are still being worked out, including a "scrubbing" the data for sensitive information. But Rep. Peter Hoekstra (news, bio, voting record), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee is delighted. He says just 68 of the 48,000 boxes of documents captured in the coalition's rapid advance three years ago and held at U.S. Central Command's forward command in Qatar have been delivered to his committee".

Wait until they find the "real deal" in Syria. I suspect they will indeed find chemical weapons. We can thank the French, Germans, and Russians for the delays at the U.N. that made it possible for Saddam to move the goods out of Iraq.

I hope no one forgets how all this happened and who was responsible.:loud:

Political pressure I am sure. All you could read about in the newspapers was Bush is a liar etc. etc, and naturally people beleived it. If he stayed silent people would grow to distrust him.

I don't see the relevance of this story because everyone acknowledged that Saddam Hussein was trying to lay his hands on WMD's in the early '90's. However, all of his attempts had failed long before 9/11 and his weapons programs had fallen by the wayside due to sanctions and UN inspections. Bush was saying that WMD's existed in 2003. Am I missing something here? Tapes from 1992 would fall squarely into the early '90's if I'm not mistaken. How do these old tapes prove Bush wasn't lying/exaggerating Iraq's weapons programs prior to the Iraq war some 10 years later?

    BTW Bushed lied, people died!

Moen is correct and the story is basically irrelevant. However, I'm sure it will be spun as some sort of justification for war by the hard core neocons who can never be swayed by facts.

Also, the term "liberal" is being improperly used here. Measured by budget deficits, expansion of the welfare state, monetary contributions to international organizations such as the IMF, expansion of government regulation over domestic activities, increases in government spending, or any other measure you can think of, Bush has been the most liberal president since LBJ. It is painful to see the memory and reputation of true conservatives soiled by the inclusion of the current President in that category.

Let's try to tighten up our use of language in the future to avoid confusion. :)

Bush definitely is a liberal president. However, since he is labeled with the term "republican" liberals will view him as an evil facist.

The conservatives are distancing themselves from Bush because he IS an evil facist.

If you think that a political party would distance themselves from a sitting president of the same party for any reason other than low poll numbers, well... I think you overestimate the process. ;)

And, for the original topic...if I read correctly, much of this stuff that will come out from this has not been even translated let alone vetted for accuracy.

It may well be that their statement of "Based on what has been revealed already, a lot of people owe him an apology. " It reminds me of these people who claim they know so much and go around calling President Bush names and insinuating he did this or that based on faulty information. And they have the nerve to say those who support the President are being misled! There is still a long way to go before anyone will know for certain all the facts, and to pretend you know them now is stupid. To put it mildly!

You're right on the money, Old Dan. The space and further research provided by history has a way of changing perceptions of people. JFK's Camelot isn't quite so clean anymore. The first Bush's hesitantcy in Desert Storm to take down Saddam now seems more reasonable. John Adams' stock is rising, while Jefferson's is falling somewhat.

    Old Dan,

There are a few things that are known with certainty. Bush has publically stated his belief in pre-emptive war. He clearly indicated the intention of spreading democracy through military action and end tyranny on the planet. He let everyone know that this might take a generation or two to accomplish. So where does that leave us? Basically in a state of perpetual warfare to "make the world safe for democracy," as President Wilson so misguidedly stated long ago. Many of us don't agree with this "mission" for the US. All someone has to do is believe the president means what he says to know enough to either agree or disagree with his policies. The intention seems to be war with Iran next. Syria and North Korea are on the table. China also fits the definition of a nation we will eventually have to fight under the Bush Doctrine. The US doesn't have the economic or military resources to carry out the plan, short of the use of nuclear weapons. If one doesn't support the plan, they shouldn't support the planner. It is unnecessary to wait for additional "facts" to form an opinion about this administration.

I agree with eveything cloudy stated. What in the way of more facts could you possibly need? Something in the shape of a mushroom cloud...."

No one in this thread has told me how this old tape proves Bush was right all along yet. I'm still waiting.

Don't know which tape you are referring to, but have you bothered to read any of what zaneman posted:
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ibd/20060315...006314issues01

This tells me there is far more than a single tape, wouldn't you say?:kewl:
