Sounds a heck of lot like an upper-class American family to me. You know, I'm always leery of demographics and statistics that get thrown around in any conversation because raw numbers are collected and interpreted with so much bias. You've taken a couple of specific examples, i.e. sipping espresso, dancing in night clubs, staying single and extrapolated their meaning into broad trends with dire consequences. I can't say that I am now or ever have been a socialist and I agree that socialism can have the affect of killing a generation's will to achieve, but the ideal behind socialism is hard to disagree with. Socialism is: A system based on public ownership of the means of production and distribution of wealth. So if you use your labor to create something, you are part owner of it and share equally in the wealth it generates. Sounds good on paper anyway. Capitalism on the other hand, uses the labor of others to create and generate wealth for the one or the few. Only in the last few decades, probably since WWII, has the idea of a prosperous working middle-class been part of the capitalist idea. Theories such as trickle down economics and a vibrant middle class with purchasing power are recent phenomena’s. It wasn't so long ago that striking workers were beaten and killed in the streets by police for daring to ask for safe working conditions and a livable wage. We've come a long way since then and our country needs to remember that it wasn't the wealthy that built this country into what it is today, it was the American workers and immigrants with their sweat and blood. The true lazy of this country are the rich that have had everything handed to them by their parents or parent's parents. A good friend of mine has worked and made millions but his two kids will never amount to anything. Laziness is not the main attribute or reason for those that are poor as the wealthy claim. And the assertion that the wealthy are lazy as the poor believe is also a misnomer, but when used in equal amounts to describe one another, they are both right. Neither class has a monopoly on the truth of the matter and both prefer to believe that which makes their conscience more at ease. I think it all gets really weird when you have the working class defending the wealthy class and vise versa. Those are the folks that really drank the kool-aid.
A lot of the wealthy are wealthy because their families were working class and they worked! Andrew Carnegie was a penniless kid at first. Read your history book...
so first gen socialist and first gen capitalist are hard working but their kids are screw ups? ill buy that
Makes sense. The parents work their backs off, since they're never around the kids grow up spoiled. I take issue with first-gen socialist though, they don't work hard either.
First of all, I don't think they are wealthy "because they were working class...". Secondly, more hard working people don't get rich that do get rich. Finally, I'd venture a guess that more wealth is handed down from generation to generation as in old money then is generated by working hard as in new money. No one ever made the point that wealthy people can't come from poor backgrounds. That's the American dream after all. But thanks for that forcefully worded irrelevant comment anyway G.
Well Moen in this nation I venture to say that the vast majority of socialist are from upper middle class backgrounds. Those who haven't sweat to make money are usually fast to give other people's money away. I also would venture to say that our nation is a heathy mix of a captailistic socialistic society with a few ill's like welfare gone astray but other wise a great enterprise for a nation to function as. Now as far as the white population of western europe dropping, its there to be seen and does not need to be vertified by a bean counter. It is one of the reasons why so many North Africians and Turks have poured into that area. To fill the void. Now I would agree with you that most of the wealth in this nation and powerbrokers are children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc of established wealth and for those who would disagree with us on this matter Just look at the Kennedy's, they need not work. Just look at the Bush clan, they need not work. The Rockefellars, they need not work, etc.......yet they pass themselves off as one of us be it democrat or republician.
If the kids grow up soft and then spoiled be it government welfare or family welfare, yeah that's my view.
Don't worry Danr...when those hard working "hens" die off, you and your socialist friends are going to tax any inheritance that is left. Pay taxes when you first earn it. Save what's left and buy a home. Now you have to pay real estate taxes. If you sell it for more...naughty, naughty...pay taxes on any capital gains. Put money away into savings and pay taxes on all dividends. Go to the store and pay sales tax for all items you buy. Fill your car up with gas and pay all gas tax. Have a New Year's drink and pay liquor tax Pay state income tax. Die off and your heirs pay inheritance tax. How much more do you want Danr? 60, 70, 80, 90% of whatever we earn? Is that enough for you? After reading your posts, I can only conclude you are either still in school or just got out...or that you work in the governemt sector or for a non-profit (that's an evil word for you) entity like a school. I have to know, because your views are so far away from the real world.
although you got to admit even though it is everyones right and the government shouldnt have any say in te matter its still kinda dumb to stock pile all your earnings with out any plan on ever spending it. dont get me wrong. there are plenty of wealthy people that spend their wealth to make more wealth and make alot of jobs in the process. but there are also so alot of wealthy people that will screw everyone else just to get richer. so i guess it comes down to the diference between successful and greedy.
Everyone wants nice roads....but nobody wants to pay taxes. Everyone wants to wage war on other countries...but nobody wants to pay taxes. Everyone wants cheap fuel...but nobody wants to pay taxes. Everyone wants safe communities...but nobody wants to pay taxes. Everyone wants good schools...but nobody wants to pay taxes. Everyone wants to get social security when they retire...but nobody wants to pay taxes. If you don't want to pay taxes, you live in the wrong country. Go live in a communist country, I hear their taxes are low.
For the most part you do not pay cap gains on house. I know where you are coming from, when the tax dollars are misspent it frustrates me also, but when spent well we do amazing things (that going to the moon thing comes to mind). As for sin taxes they make a lot of sense to me considering the fact that drinking costs society soooo much.
You are most welcome, Moen! And just for that rude comment, get ready for a barrage of flame rockets!
