I've heard a few theories but I'm going with a lightening strike. Really interested in tomc's conspiracy theory though.

It is actually aliens. The birds sustained the trauma by flying into a force field, the kind found around a space ship. It happens from time to time in various places in the world.

 

I think we should just take the government's word for whatever happened. I'm sure they'd tell us whatever we needed to know.

I think this is kinda like shark attacks. Everyone makes a huge deal when the event is reported but then it always turns out that the occurence isn't really out of the norm. As in tom's link, the crab kill had occured a few times in the past but now, linked with the birds & fish, it becomes another conspiracy. As a kid, I grew up along a river & my Dad just reminded me that a massive kill would happen every few years there. I guess no one ever pinpointed the exact reason for it but toxins from industry, farms, construction etc were always suspected as well as those morons who liked electrocute or blow up the river creatures.

 

And, of course, underwater UFO bases. Or just go ahead and be a lemming and believe that toxins crap Fox News tries to pass off.
