(AP) An aide to Sen. Jim Webb was arrested Monday when he entered a Senate office building with a loaded pistol belonging to the senator.

Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said the aide was charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possessing an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition.

Webb's office identified the aide as Phillip Thompson and said he was "a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the senator."

A congressional official briefed on the incident said Webb, D-Va., gave the gun to Thompson when the assistant drove him to an airport earlier in the day. Thompson, upon entering the Senate building, forgot he was carrying the weapon.

"To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight," Webb's office said in a statement. It said it had no other details.

The weapon was revealed when the aide went through an X-ray machine at an entrance of the Russell Senate Office Building, Schneider said. She said the man had a loaded pistol with two additional loaded magazines.

An aide to Senator Jim Webb has been arrested and charged with trying to carry a handgun into the Russell Senate Office Building.

Capitol police say Phillip Thompson was in posession of a loaded pistol and two fully loaded magazines.

13News has found out that the gun belongs to Senator Webb. A congressional official says that when Thompson drove Webb to the airport, the senator gave his aide the gun.

Thompson apparently forgot he was carrying the weapon. It showed up when he went through an x-ray machine at the Senate building.

Thompson is charged with carrying a pistol without a license, and possessing an unregistered firearm.

Senator Webb Aide To Be In Court Today

An aide to Senator Jim Webb is expected to appear before a D.C. Superior Court magistrate judge today.

Phillip Thompson faces weapons violations following his arrest at the Russell Senate Office Building late yesterday morning. Thompson was arrested after an officer stationed at an X-ray machine allegedly saw a gun in a bag he was trying to take into the building. Thompson has told police he retrieved the bag for Senator Webb.

The Virginia Democrat's office issued a statement yesterday saying that Thompson's actions were an oversight. Thompson has been charged with carrying an unlicensed handgun. He has also been charged with possession of unregistered ammunition.

Thompson was held in custody overnight. He is to appear this afternoon for presentment of formal charges in court.

What do you mean, Webb is a big advocate for gun owner's rights. It wasn't him carrying the gun and it isn't known if it was even his gun, but... IT IS A GUN! What more do you need? :thumb:

 

I don't know Bones, these gosh darn southern democrats are attacking security police, packing for meetings or whatever else comes up. Maybe we should send them over to Iraq to take care of business since they seem to be itching for a fight.

 

Jim Webb's only failing in my opinion is that he is a Conservative Democrat. But he'd have to be to get elected in Virginia. Democrats aren't perfect, they're just better than the alternative. :mouth:

 

I can observe no significant difference in the way Democrats and Republicans think about or approach the issues of trade, immigration, foreign policy, level of federal spending, etc. The "alternative" is largely a mirage.
