There, I fixed it for you. You understand what happens in the warm and fuzzy confines of somewhere in New York. Not the world stage.

Well, that was a good guess. Here's the real, short answer:

Let us look at the Soviet system and how it was different from the Democratic-Capitalist model in the United States. For one, the USSR had a command economy. These were economies that were planned based on orders sent from a centralized agency or sector within the government. In other words, the economy is planned by the government, unlike the American system which is considered “free” market.

A second feature of the USSR is their Single-Party Rule. Within the Soviet Union, there was only the communist party which removed political opponents. In order to achieve this, it established the third aspect of the Soviet system: extensive internal security network. This included police, military and secret police, all of whom were charged with ensuring the population was compliant and obedient to Soviet Rule.

So how come it all collapsed? Well America had an obvious role. In the 1980s the new right movement was met with great victory when Ronald Reagan was elected president. Due to a notable lack of funds, the USSR had begun scaling back its nuclear arms, along with the US. However, when Reagan came to power, he wished to revitalize the Cold War and succeeded. Reagan began pushing the Soviets back into an arms race typical of the 1950s and 60s.

The Soviet Union also experienced a change in leadership. When Mikhail Gorbachev came into power, he instituted two new programs. Glasnost, which allowed for greater media freedom and less internal security, freed up the press to begin making accusations against the state and demanding reform.

(Aahh. So when individual FREEDOM "intervened", things started going downhill.)

Perestroika, the second program, set out to be the first of several programs that would restructure the Soviet economy so it could begin growing financially. (Oh man, who wanted growth anyway!?)

However, the economy began to flounder during this restructuring and, in combination with geo-political pressure from the United States and internal journalistic criticisms, the Soviet Union began to collapse.

The Soviet satellite nations (ie-Yugoslavia, Latvia, etc) began to revolt and Gorbachev announced that the Red Army would no longer support communist regimes in those countries and withdrew them back into Russia. This is considered the death knell for the Soviet Union since it lead to the destruction of the Berlin Wall, often viewed as the defining moment that the USSR died.

Then go!! I don't know why you're here! You obviously don't like freedom and you think the majority has a poor quality of life. Go over seas and find out what a real poor quality of life actually is! I wouldn't give you a nickel for France.

The only reason I stay in this country is to pursue Marine Biology.

Read my previous article. I think the criticisms were completely founded.

It has become very clear why you're an Obama supporter.

    vess1 "Birds of a feather...."

Well there should be a nice communist country somewhere where you can do the same!! If not, why? Because they don't promote individualism and growth?

You're going against what you believe. If you get a job as a Marine Biologist, you're seeking self improvement and your going to be smarter and paid better than an average person. You've just proved you don't believe in your theory.

Here's a good article for you:

Exactly what Obama believes in. So it's no wonder you're happy.

But look out. It talks about change coming about by means of violence! The poor have to revolt because the rich aren't going to give up their wealth voluntarily!

No plan is perfect, as stated earlier, I wanted Cynthia Mckinney of the green party to win, but since she did not Obama should be a satisfactory alternative.

The is one major reason why communism fell and it is quite a simple one realy, the People did not want it any more, they were tired of living as slaves to the few. Have you ever met any poles, East germans, Czecks, etc who lived under the regiem?
President Regan provided the catalist that helped to bring down the very unsavory system and I thank him wholeheartedly for that.

There will always be people who want to be controlled and told what to do. And as long as the Gestapo or the KGB isn't coming after them, they are content with how things are going.

That is how people like Hitler are able to come to power in the first place. And, if Hitler had won, there would have been 'world peace' too and those kinds of people who like to be controlled and told what to do would have been quite content with it.

    WOW!

This thread has taken on such an interesting angle thanks to Isaiah and his Utopian views. Only wish you were right dude but you're not.
The ugly injection of realism and thousands of years of history just plain messes it all up as has been pointed out in a few instances (Cesaer, Stalin, Hitler etc).

Now there's three guys that wanted world peace - AS LONG AS THEY CONTROLLED THE WORLD. That in itself is not peace.
You made a comment that if "you ruled the world...", How would that be accomplished? Through a lot of war and killing I'm afraid and no one has pulled it off yet.

Conservatives and Republicans war mongers etc.? Got news for you (and I'm sure Vess and a few others would back me up) I am certainly not conservative nor am I a Republican. As it turns out I pushed for Obama real hard.

I'm not happy with the way things are but I had the choice to vote and express my views. Obama won. I don't see him as the saviour by any means but a change that can be positive. He's sure as hell not going to create world peace.

Not all Republicans are bad (I have voted Republican on several occasion as well as Independent). Not all Democrats are bad, nor are Independents, Socialists, Communists - name your flavor.

The problem is many have very high personal stakes and WILL run over whatever gets in their way.

If you want to dig WAY back on PRWE you'll find a thread I started called "Communism Rocks". Well, it does - IN THEORY. Problem is that it sucks in practice. Humans have different goals and aspirations. Ultimately this is why ANY form of government has it's flaws.

These flaws do indeed lead to war in some cases. Toss in religion and it gets even worse. This is history in a nutshell.

Ahhh France! The great surrenderers. Take a look back at history. Had it not been for France we might not exist as a country. They put a lot on the line.

Ever heard of the French Revolution? Fascinating history and A LOT of bloodshed.

WWII? They just rolled over and died? Come on Hitler take over the country. Ever heard of the Resistance?
Maybe, just maybe the Resistance helped the Allies plan and execute D Day a bit.

Marine biology? Jacques Cousteau was French last I checked. Betting you could get a good education there. Speaking French might help though.

Which Geneva convention nation state did they come from? Oh and BTW, not that Lincoln had a hand in Torture, or FDR in Genocide, or for that matter Truman, or Wilson...

Frankly, Isiah, your talking out of your hind quarters. Go find some nation state to take the GITMO prisoners. It seems that no body wants them.

It is quite known and accepted that the United states of interrogation is actually torture by most standards. Condiliza Rice can stand there and lie to us all she wants, but it will always be torture.

You nailed it. That is what I have learned. There is no perfect system of government that exists because governing large groups of people and trying to keep everyone happy will never be an easy thing. Some are just meant to control and the people's happiness is not of concern.

The U.S. for example, is in all likelihood transitioning to something else as the years go by. We began as a Constitutional republic. A nation simply governed by a short list of laws. Now we've turned into a democracy which from what I understand, our forefathers never wanted. A democracy is strictly a transitional form of government. It can't last. It lasts up until the point at which the people realize they can elect the person that will give them the most out of the public treasury until it is broke.

Well, our public treasury is not only broke but, we're 10 trillion or more in debt and a major part of Obama getting elected were his promises of all the money he was going to give out from the public treasury. Which, they don't actually have any to give out. This is unprecedented in history that such a scam could work for so long but it does. For now.

You see, you always start out with bondage. People don't like that. So they tend to have a revolt and gain their freedom after enough time passes. For a while, this is appreciated. As the generations go by, the free people become increasingly wealthy. A few more generations of wealth and wealth turns into complacency. Complacency turns into eventual reliance (on the government). The people become lazy. And eventually, reliance will bring us back to bondage. For a while, I believe the U.S. has been transitioning from the complacency stage to the reliance stage. For example, if everybody doesn't get government bailouts, everything will go into a collapse. Many rely on welfare and unemployment.

Basically, it's just a matter of time until our wonderful little democracy transitions into bondage and you look at some of the people we have in power and it isn't much of a stretch of the imagination. They want to run your lives. They believe they know what's best for you.
The funny thing is, Obama could secretly be our worst nightmare. He could have kept it hidden and the people enthusiastically elected him based on what they thought they knew about him. It's very simple for everything to go down hill really. Eventually, someone will come along and want to fill a power vacuum and it's not likely it will be in the people's best interest.

Nobody has to be tortured. If they would just give them the information they have up front, they can go back to their cell, be treated humanely and given 3 meals a day, along with social time with their friends. For free. That option is always there.

Quite a bit better than what a US captive would receive, wouldn't you say? Frankly, I couldn't care less if they get tortured. If you don't get involved with the B.S., you should never be under any suspicion and you should never have to worry about it.

There's plenty of interests to take up in the world. If you want to plot terror against innocent civilians anywhere in the world, than you risk being caught and getting tortured or killed. It's a risky game. Well known by all of them from the start. That's what they choose. It's a gamble. Gamblers can't get gambler insurance. If they lose they lose.
