So I listen to guys like Young Jeezy, Linkin Park, ACDC, Slipknot, and Eminem..

If you are a christain and you listen to these type of bands is it a sin??

Just wondering, because some say it is...because they curse and talk about sinful stuff

There are some denominations purporting to be Christian that would have you believe that listening to practically any music will send you straight to hell. Worldly music is the scourge.

I equate it with people condemning others not sharing their beliefs to eternities in hell. Nobody knows, only the Master and the devil know. An' they ain't doin' lotsa talkin'.

Oh, btw I listen to a lot of "Christian" music, but I don't consider myself "Christian" as those people refer to themselves. I just like the music.

I once listen to Pink Floyd and now two of those members are dead. Were they smite or smote by the lord. Makes you wonder Eugene about the darkside of the moon and cows.

    Well put Scottishmoney.

They may not be doin lotsa talking but their "mouthpieces" always are.

Here's my take on it Stainless. Do you have any concept between right and wrong? Yeah, stupid question because I KNOW you do.

So if you listen to music because you personally enjoy it even though some may find the lyrics offensive does that make you bad?

Music is an expression. VERY often an expression of what is really going on in the world and/or society. Yes, it can be brutally realistic.

I personally listen to music for just that - the music. Most of what I listen to is instrumental. Then on the other hand I listen to my share of blues, reggae older rock etc.

Themes covered in these songs range from drinking, sex, various forms of religion and the list goes on.

My wedding song was a Bob Marley tune yet I never converted to being a Rastafarian.

A popular song when I was in high school was Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll by Ian Drury and the Blockheads.
Well, I'm not out cavorting with "anything that moves", I don't do drugs but I do still listen to Rock and Roll.
The vast majority of my classmates (a few thousand if you take into consideration four grades) have not fallen into the trap. Betting most of us still listen to rock though.

To me telling someone what they can or can't listen to is telling them we don't want you to have a clue to everyday life and how others perceive it.

Yup, reckon that's another reason why I'm not overly religious.

Just my take on it though.

Listen to what you like, I know that I do everything from Gregorian chanting to Marlyn Manson does that make me a sinner!! Possibly in the eye's of some it does.
But I dont hurt anyone, did it lead me into a life of debauchery (I wish LOL) do I do drugs (Well yes lots of em from my Dr LOL)
Look you want to live life as a good christian well there is realy just one thing, Do unto others as you would have then do unto you :D (Unless of course you are a Sado masochist, then it gets complicated LOL)

King of the Hill had a great quote about Christian rock.

"Can't you see you're not making Christianity any better, you're just making rock 'n roll worse".

I had a Christian guy try to convert me, he gave me pamphlets about the evils of rock and roll....it had lyrics from 2 bands (and song specifically) that I love...

Sympathy for the Devil by the Stones and it listed the whole Aqualung album by Jethro Tull....along with great bands like Sabbath and Maiden.

to be honest...I am glad Rock and hard core Christians dont mix... :)

Depends really. What do you take percieve sin as? To me, the F word is a inappropriate, but I don't think you're going to hell because you listen to a song that has that word in it. Linkin Park I don't really see anything wrong with, other than there new album having the F word in it a few times. I don't have a problem really with people "cussing", as long as it's not taking God's name in vain. I haven't really listened to the others except Eminem, and the only thing I really see wrong with listening to his stuff is #1, you're supporting him, and his lifestyle. And by doing that, you're encouraging him to sin even more.

You ask yourself, "But what difference does it make if I don't listen to him? There's still thousands of other people out there that do". True, but if everyone got the mindset mentioned, then he'd probably have to do something else to stay famous? In my opinion, I don't want to support a guy that talks about beating woman. I just don't want to support his lifestyle. And I do that if I listen to his music. Now I'm not sure of what the other bands talk about, but IMO, why support them if they talk about hitting woman, doing drugs, rape, etc? JMO, and others will probably disagree. :D :)

    Phoenix,

Listining to someone cuss may not be a sin....but cussing is a sin, and by your logic, if we support them, we are encouraging them also...

It doesn't matter if Eminem Is REALLY bad, and that Linkin Park only does it a couple of times, a sin is a sin.

IMO, you can't say "well, they only do it a few times, so that is okay, but Eminem..oh no, he does it too much".

    get my point?

Who say that cussing is a sin? Now I know that it says thou shall not take the lord gods name in vain but i aint seen it say thou shalt not swear!!

    THE TEN COMMANDMENTS -- EXODUS 20:1- 17

    1) "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
    2) "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image,"
    3) "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain;"
    4) "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."
    5) "Honor thy father and thy mother:"
    6) "Thou shalt not kill."
    7) "Thou shalt not commit adultery"
    8) "Thou shalt not steal."
    9) "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."
    10) "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house,.....nor anything that is thy neighbor's

Nothing about cussing, Rock music, Drinking, smoking etc :D

Surely rock and roll causes all the sins listed above in the 10 Commandments.:D

    Yep I believe it said
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth
But were those the word of God or man? we know that the 10 commandments are suppose to originate with God so is this the appendices :D

Just because someone drinks, swears and listens to rock music dont make them a bad person, they might well be the most neighbourly of people,
You ever heard the expression dont judge a book by its cover and also the tale of the Good samaritan?
I have known bible thumpers who woudnt give you a drink of water if you were dying of thirst and bikers who would give you there last penny or shirt off there back.
Let he who be without sin cast the first stone!! I beklieve someone once said LOL

I never said they were bad, there are some who are GREAT people...I am just saying if you are a christain, is it wrong?

Also, if Paul was talking for God, isn't it safe to assume it is supposed to be?

I get your point, and thought about it for awhile. I was agreed with you fully for a bit, till I got to thinking otherwise, lol. :D Here's another thing. I agree sin is sin. You can steal a nickel, or you can murder somebody, sin is sin. However, when you listen to a song by Eminem, that talks about beating a woman, what are you supporting him to do? A song that talks about raping someone, what are you doing?

You're supporting them to make more songs like that, and to possibly even do that. But, a song that has uses a word that's a cuss word in it, but has a meaning apart from the word, all it does is use it. IMO, you're not supporting the word by listening to the song. When you listen to a song, you're supporting the meaning of the song, and the band. You're not really supporting the word? Does that make sense? Now I could be totally off and wrong about this, but just something esle to throw out there. Interesting discussion. :)

Thinking about it, I will agree with you...but then what about people like Kid Rock? Do you think one should listen to him?

He doesnt talk about killing, but he cusses a LOT...

I will admit I like good old rock and roll and even some newer bands with questionable lyrics and all...but I do not get my morals from a rock song. When I listen to Steve Miller sing "go on, take the money and run", I am in no way supporting robbing a house...its just a cool song. Or Jimmi Hendrix when he talks about "shooting his old lady" and I certainly do not support the devil but I think the song 'Sympathy for the Devil' is one of the Stones greatest...the list goes on and on...

Oddly the only religious songs I like are old gospel, specifically from sam cooke (but I like many of his songs) like 'hem of his garment' or 'peace in the valley' and some Carter Family songs... I really like 'I saw the light' by Hank Williams.
