I am a catholic and am proud of it. But when I tell people this they often cringe. Why is that? Why do some people think that the Catholic religion is a bad one? Anyone care to answer for me?

It might be all those pedophiles in the priesthood swaying people's opinions. Just sayin'.

Yes I can see your point. I do not like that part, but that is not every priest. Sure the Catholic religion is very strict and all, and if I have children I plan to raise them to be catholics.

You are right, it wasn't every priest. And it isn't even the deeply religious pedophiles preying on innocent young boys entrusted to their care that bothers me. It's the Catholic leadership that knew about the problems for years and covered up the crimes worldwide for decades or even longer that probably put people off. Incidentally, I was raised in a Catholic school and all my relatives are Catholics on both sides. I have a little inner knowledge of the institution and I keep my distance.

I have many Catholic friends as well as Methodist, Lutheran, Jewish, Baptist and even a Wiccan. Whatever floats your boat I say.
Personally I am of no organzied faith.

Honestly I find it odd that people would "cringe" when you told them you are Catholic. For sure they have had some bad press concerning priests but I don't blame that on a church going Catholic.

Far as that goes I'd be willing to bet the same goes on in other faiths as well. Pretty certain actually.

The only time I really cringe is when a Baptist or Jehovah Witness invades my privacy by knocking on my door and telling me I need to join their church or rot in hell. I've never had a Catholic do that to me and I don't go out knocking on people's doors to tell them they shouldn't go to church because I don't.

    Faith is fine.

There is good and bad in all religions, I have known Catholic priests who would give the shirts of there back if they thought it would help someone and by the same token I have met a very few who dont desrve to be called Men of god in any sence of the word

They cringe because they find it to be a very strict religion. And then when the molesting started, they just added that to what they thought about it. So they do not understand it so they cringe.

Funny. I have never thought of the Catholic religion as strict compared to many others.

Really? Many of my friends who are of other religions see us as very strict. I have gone to services with them at their places of worship and at least around here, they are much stricter in my catholic church than they are in any others around here.

Still can't see why they'd cringe Angie. If they aren't Catholic why should they care in the first place?

Depends on where she lives. I've lived and worked in communities in the United States where one's religion was QUITE important. Sometimes it meant people cringed when you said you were of a certain religion, and sometimes it meant people cringed when you said you weren't.

Glad that you get it, KLJ. It is like that around here with certain religions. Thanks for understanding. It is apparent that Clembo does not.

Sorry I don't understand it Angie and sorry it's like that where you live. I guess that's why I don't understand it if that makes any sense.

The only ones that cringe are the ones that aren't Catholic. The bible says We aren't suppose to judge but everyone does, especially when it comes to Religion. The last time I went to Church, for Church Services, was with my grandmother and at a Southern Baptist Church in the middle of nowhere, and I sat there and listened to two old spinsters bad-mouthing Catholics and I thought to myself, what did those peeps dew to you? They are good peeps so why judge them for their Religion? Why? Peeps judge others because they hate themselves and in order to like themselves, they need to hate others more than they hate themselves so they judge. :(

    Question for you:

The bible says "to love thy neighbor as thyself." With that, what happens when you hate yourself? Do you think you will Love thy neighbor as thyself when you hate yourself? And there are the religions that teach you are a piece of chit even before you exist the womb, so if you are a piece of chit, how are you going to Love thy neighbor when you are a piece of chit?

What if, instead of Loving thy neighbor as thyself, you Love thyself as thy neighbor?

    See the logic? ;)

    Ribbit :)

Ps: The logical errors in the bible are intentional. It's all part of this Game. :D

Yes it does make sense to me CLembo. I guess if it is not like that where you live then you would not be able to see it as I do.

BINGO! That is EXACTLY why I can't understand how anybody would want to call themselves Catholic. Even if I were a religious person, I would steer well clear of what can only be described a criminal organization. And not just their willful sheltering of known pedophiles, but their stances on issues like birth control use in Africa. It is absolutely abhorrent how they totally disregard the safety and well being of their own followers. In fact I would say that as much as I don't understand why people are catholics, I feel more pity for them than anything else, since the followers are the victims.

I am proud to be a catholic. But I do not agree with some of the things that are happening.
