What he has discharged Congress & the Senate Stripped the States of there rights & abandond the Constitution !! How about proclaimed himself supreme ruler for life ?? I know declared the US a one party state and abolished voting & placed the Army in controll.

Bush has been on this path for the past 6 plus years. He and especially Cheney, have sought to consolidate more power into the executive branch since the days of Richard Nixon and Watergate. Cheney, under Nixon, saw executive power curtailed after the scandal and has been trying to restore as much power as he can back into the presidency ever since. He saw Watergate much differently that the rest of us, that is as an abuse of power, he saw it as an event that limited the power of the presidency. The abusive aspect didn't seem to bother him very much and if his role today is any indication, it still doesn't bother him.

The checks and balances of the 3 branches of government were put there by much wiser men than occupy the reigns of power these days. The Republican congress has been willing to completely ignore it's oversight responsibilities over the executive branch for the past 6 years and Cheney has used this time to get legislation past that gives the president unprecedented powers. None of this power grab happened in the first 6 years of the Republican controlled Congress and quite the opposite, they impeached a sitting president and argued against many of the powers long held by the executive branch. When George Bush came to power a large sucking sound could be heard all over Washington as more and more power was obsorbed by the executive branch and the congress was only too happy to look the other way.

As short-sighted as this power grab is you would think the Republicans would realize that eventually they would be giving these excessive powers to a Democratic president. Well, I guess it's not like Conservative means progressive or forward thinking anyway or in this case, thinking at all.

I did not say that he has not paved the way for a dictatorship, I asked what he had done to declare himself the supream being as you state.

 

De Orc, I believe you are forgetting that the presidents perennial critics seem to be in denial about any sign of improvement, such as the first signs of success with the surge.

Moen and Danr have joined Harry Reid in assuming that the war is lost. But, as the first reports come back from the “surge,” it seems that it isn’t the president, but his critics who are in denial. While the president has changed his strategy, they haven’t changed their tune, continuing to report on the setbacks (and there are many) and all but ignoring the successes (which even some in the “Liberal Press” have begun to note).

Especially in this post, have you noticed that the “Moen & Groan” trio often dispense with the facts and levy a bevy of charges at President Bush, often without substantiating them — or by pulling statements out of context and/or offering only an incomplete version of the situation, leaving out key facts.

 

You have yet to dispute any facts. You can't. All you ever have are personal attacks, name calling, misquotes, and childish behavior. You are no one to be talking about denial. Anyone that looks at a list of your posts can see you have nothing of substance to contribute, ever. It's a little too late to make a rush for the moral highground in your case I'm affraid.

Your tone changes like the reasons given for going to Iraq depending on who you are talking to. True enough but Bush has a way of interpreting things unlike anyone else. I mean he was able to glean torture out the Geneva Conventions. He interpreted the EPA as Everyone Pollutes Anything. So you have to be careful even at hinting at something with this guy.

 

That's not quite the whole story. Title 10, Chapter 15, Section 333 of the US Code defined the conditions under which the President could use force against domestic insurrection. The Posse Comitatus Act also limited the President's use of the military to police domestic disturbances. However, the Defense Authorization Act modified this section of the US Code to permit the President to basically declare Martial Law in the event that anyone attempts to "obstruct the enforcement of laws." This open-ended language in the Act, plus the Military Commissions Act of 2006 that permits the President to declare almost everyone who disagrees with the Federal Government to be an "enemy combatant," plus the surveilance provisions of the Patriot Act provides the legal basis to override the Bill of Rights. There's a lot more to this for anyone who cares to do the research, but I'm not a big fan of the lengthy posts that are popular with some folks here.

The President has not declared himself to be a dictator [only "the decider"], but the legal basis for dictatorship is being put into place.

Republicans always claim they want government out of their business but I can't think of anything more my business than my civil liberties. What could the advantage of creating a policestate out of our country possibly be? Who can possibly benefit from this configuration? Lets just hope that good old American pendulum is able to swing in the other direction and soon.

The real danger is that if the pendulum swings in one direction then is followed by two or three cataclysmic political, social, or natural events, drastic measures can be implemented on a distracted citizenry under the guise of safety and National security. Dissenting voices are quickly qwelled under such circumstances and it's a long road back to normal once this threshold has been crossed.
