Fauci Responds to Ex-CDC Director’s ‘Disturbing’ Lab-Leak Suppression Accusation

Anthony Fauci on Thursday forcefully denied suppressing the lab-leak theory in the early days of the pandemic, after former CDC director Robert Redfield accused the former chief White House medical adviser of sidelining him from conversations about Covid’s origins.

Appearing before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on Wednesday, Redfield accused Fauci of intentionally excluding him from a call with virologists in February 2020 because Fauci knew he believed the virus emerged from a Chinese virology lab and didn’t want Redfield convincing other experts of that view. (The facts must always fit the narrative, else you are cast out of public light)

“I do think it illustrates one point that’s worth really focusing on: when you have a group of people that decide there can only be one point of view, that’s problematic,” he said. (AS IF HE SAID THIS! He has made is clear that his point of view is all that matters.) “And I’ll keep on saying that’s antithetical to science and unfortunately that’s what they did.” Ironic!


Asked to respond to the accusation by Fox News’ Neil Cavuto Thursday evening, Fauci insisted he kept open mind about the pandemic’s origins and was not responsible for inviting attendees to the call with virologists.

“I almost have to laugh at that,” Fauci told Fox News. “That’s totally bizarre. First of all, I wasn’t leaning totally strongly one way or the other. I’ve always kept an open mind. (Damned lies!) As the data evolved, and evolutionary virologists began to look at the data, it looked much more likely that it was a natural occurrence from an animal reservoir. I have always kept a completely open mind that it could be one or the other.”

Fauci went on to call Redfield’s accusations “disturbing.”

During the February 1 call, a group of evolutionary virologists suggested that Covid may have stemmed from a lab accident and may have been genetically engineered, according to the memo. But just three days later, four of the experts who attended that meeting wrote a paper, later published in Nature Medicine, that argued Covid had “mutations” that supported the explanation that it had been transmitted to humans from animals. Emails obtained by the subcommittee revealed that Fauci “prompted” the paper, as one of its authors put it in a cover email to a scientific journal.

During the Wednesday hearing, committee chairman Jim Jordan implied that Fauci dangled a multimillion-dollar grant to induce the researchers to change their previously-held opinions that the coronavirus originated from a lab in Wuhan, China.

“And then three months later, ‘shazam,’ they get $9 million from Dr. Fauci. Well, isn’t that something?” Jordan said at Wednesday’s hearing.

In his Thursday interview, Fauci insisted that the grant had been approved before his call with the virologists and emphasized that the grant had to survive many layers of scrutiny before being approved.

Based on what I'm seeing, it's only Chinese researchers who have found COVID-19 in bats. The scientists from the government that pretended the virus didn't exist, then fudged the numbers, then went on a 'zero COVID' crusade, welding people inside their homes. OF COURSE WE CAN TRUST THEM

I am not confident Fauci will ever pay for the damage he has done to our society while he is alive. He took away my senior year of high school, forced an untested shot into my arm, and ruined my first two years of college.

Nobody believes in the lab leak because it's absurdly unlikely. However, in science you rarely if ever can (or even should) say something is true or not true. It's not in the nature of science to declare universal truths, just likelihoods. Unfortunately, I've seen both the left and right try to weaponize this uncertainty to their advantage. This is what you look like though when you try to do that:

I always felt like you had an intimate working knowledge of this virus mess. I don't know what you do and wouldn't be rude enough to ask on a public forum..... But do you know how the inner workings of a lab like this work? I have the television/movie image in my mind of people walking through airlocks, disinfecting and donning full protective garb and proceeding in to the inner workings of the place to do their work..... Is that movie image somewhat realistic?

 

I do work in science, and in this case, yes that's actually pretty accurate! I don't work with nearly as dangerous specimens, but I do most of that (minus airlock entrances).

There's a standardized system of biosafety level (BSL). I've only ever worked in BSL-1/2, but Wuhan institute of virology was set up at BSL-4

Unfortunately you do not work at that Chinese lab. However, at least two of the whistle-blowing Chinese doctors that did work there are dead or missing.

 

So then given this is a BSL-4 facility, it would take some pretty dramatic and unrealistic circumstances for a virus to exit the facility then I would think, right?

 

Yeah, not impossible, but very unlikely.

The bigger evidence is that we've found samples in animals much closer to the human versions than anything in the lab. I said in another thread it was something like 99% similarity with the strains in the lab vs. 99.98% similarity with the animal strains.

We've also learned that it jumped from animals to humans in at least 2 separate events (lineages of the virus). So now if it came from the lab, we have to assume it escaped twice, with 2 different strains. Those strains go on to infect animals, then that moves back to humans.

It's not impossible it came from the lab, and we can never really say it's impossible, but it's just so incredibly unlikely.

Because that is the simplest answer and as far as I know, that's what has been considered to be the "leak."
Remember, in the beginning it was reported that one of the doctors in the lab died from it.

 

As the layers of the onion are peeled away, it becomes more and more evident that the origin was, in fact, a lab leak.

Fauci and his cohorts obviously tried to cover their trail by pushing the “wet market” narrative and it’s a shame that there are still people who believe it.

No. There was one paper on that topic in like 2015 that involved a large group of researchers, 2 of which were from the Wuhan institute. However, the experiments actually took place in North Carolina.
