I'm old enough to remember Christmas. Today, it's something else. That said, my version of Christmas and the typical Christian's is no where near the same. I'm in it for the loot...and the family, I guess...since they bring the loot. (that's a joke, btw) The religious aspects never appealed to me, as they were too demanding I believe without bothering to explain to me why I should believe what they believe. "You just do!"...works for some, I'm sure, but not on me.
Fox has started it's annual tradition of reporting their perceived "War on Christmas". It's an annual event with all the fixings. Putting Christian beliefs on a pedestal, ignoring other beliefs, making snow innuendos. If there is a real war on Christmas it is from an over emphasis on consumerism. They never seem to complain about that war for some reason.
I think those who have commercialized Christmas are every bit as vile as those on the left who are trying to eliminate it.
What's the big deal? If you want to celebrate Christmas then celebrate however it suits you. If the term "Happy Holidays" offends you tough. Man up for cripes sake. Put on those big boy pants and say thank you. Unless mama didn't teach you any manners. For clarification by you I am not singling you out David. I'm referring to every single whiner that wants to, well, whine that the left wants to destroy Christmas. It's a diaper that overfloweth with crap. Anyone with a sliver of brain and shred of integrity knows this.
Oh, no matter what happens, this "leftie" will always celebrate Christmas, just not the way Christians demand I do. Nice shirt, by the way....way better than that yuppie-scum thing you had on last week.
Happy Holidays doesn't bother me at all. I actually find it kind of odd and more than a little funny. I know if I didn't believe in a certain holiday, I wouldn't just call it something else so I felt ok about celebrating it. But to each their own. I now live in an area where the whole Happy Holidays thing isn't really an issue. But when I lived in a bigger city and would get the occasional Happy Holidays, I would sometimes just just look perplexed at the person and ask 'What Holidays'? I would often get silence or for those that replied, something like..."You know...Christmas and stuff".
Yeah, it's only the one celebrated by about 95% of Americans. If you believe people who say Happy Holidays are doing it to be inclusive of Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, I think you are deluding yourself. As your photo suggests, I really doubt it is the Jews (or the Kwanzaans) who get bent out of shape about saying Merry Christmas any more than I would if a Jewish person wished me Happy Hanukkah. I'd take it as a good tiding and wish the exact same thing back to them. But whatever makes one feel better about celebrating, go for it. I wish them a Happy Holidays. I might giggle a bit when I say it but I do wish it.
There's a war on sneezing? I don't have a problem with "Happy Holidays" per sey, as I consider it a combination of Christmas and New Years, but when you've got Santa all dressed up next to a Christmas tree for an ad and they distance themselves from actually calling it a Christmas tree... yeah, it perturbs me a bit. It's cowardly, IMO. Jewish faith not represented enough? Eh, they could try not to be so whiny. Even blacks laughed at the attempt to market a holiday specifically for them. Then again, maybe I could send a gift card from Big 'n' Small to that Iranian midget wishing him longer legs or something during this grand "Midget Miracle!" day we're sure to have this year. Anyone got some polonium on 'em?
For me, and it has pretty much held wherever I have lived in the US - small town or large city - this time of year is just special in this country. You can see it in most people at most times between that Holiday in late November to that Holiday around the beginning of January. Sure things are still tough and people still have bad days but there is still something special in the air. You really can't miss it even if you really try and we don;t have a lot of that good feeling these days. I know I am a little more jolly this time of year and it is not just because I am fat and have a white beard. So I am not fibbing when I say I really don't care what people want to call it. I just enjoy it and hope most other people do too.
TH and Joe (and others) would probably point out that all the fuss is really coming from people who believe FOX is right on all things. All of us normal people aren't falling for the line, but FOX will never let it be that simple. They want us to believe "It's an attack on American values, damn it!" and they are harshing our collective Christmas buzz. The bastards. I wish it were as simple as saying "ignore the bastards", but they are a powerful media, and inevitably they set some of the tone. Again, it's a case of them (Reps) actually hurting themselves (and the rest of us), while blaming Democrats for it.
