Well if you ever come visit wonderful Battle Creek, Michigan, home of Kelloggs Cereal. Founder Clark Kellogg in his infinate wisdom and sanity imported hundreds of black squirrels into the city as he felt they were much healthier than brown "rat like" squirrels. 125 years later you'd be lucky to find a brown squirrel within 100 miles of the city center. They are generally mean too
I have heard of these and from what I hear they are quite rare to see---I can't remember everything but I think it is like a Albino dog or such....it is a gene problem. Speedy
Cool. My uncle claims that he a saw a completely black Black-Tailed Deer in the Sierra Nevada about 60 years ago. I have never seen a black deer. In 1989, while hunting in western Colorado, I had saw a big black wild stallion bounding through the forest in three feet of powdered snow. He was running full-tilt with a mare and colt. Steam was blowing from their nostrils like mythical war horses at full gallop. It was the most amazing animal scene that I have ever see. Magnificient.

That may be, but my uncle is a very believable observer. He has been around for 94 years and was born and raised in Folsom. He knows deer. Lighting is very important, but Black-Tailed Deer around here usually have patches of white fur. http://www.cointalk.org/thread10331-papparazzi-of-the-forest.html I think natural mutations are possible, and I tend to believe my uncle. The totally white deer of central Illinois were imported many years ago from the Argonne Forest in France. Not so?
I wasn't saying your uncle was wrong because there is such a thing as a black deer but it is rare for it to happen.....so I was just making some things that Might have happened.... Speedy
One local community used to be pretty much exclusively inhabited by gray squirrels then suddenly the black ones showed up and before long the gray's all moved to our town seeking sanctuary. Last year the black's showed up in our town and now we are seeing a definite decrease in the gray's population. The black's are definitely more aggressive and have a habit of sneaking into houses when the occupants are away. The big problem is my wife, she gets mad every time I try to get rid of one, saying she likes to see their large black tails. They don't seem to be too intimidated by cats but they are very afraid of large, loud dogs and AK-47's.
What few squirrels we have around here are all the red variety. Think they are referred to as Fox squirrels, and are usually larger than the gray variety. One of the finest flys for trout fishing is tied with tuffs of red squirrel tail hair. Danged if you don't have to kill them before you can get their tails cut off.
