    I've been meditating over a Haynes manual, apropos a front left wheel area
    squeal (definite rotatory component) that's driving me mAd (it only or
    mostly occurs on acceleration and right turns), and apparently,
    apparently, there's nothing really holding the inner ends of the transaxle
    drive- axles, which are splined to tripod- type bearing- spiders (in the
    inner CV joint), to the tripod- bearing outer race or housing and hence to
    the transaxle itself, except for the plastic lubricant- holding and
    protective boot, so, technically, if the stuff on the outer end of the
    drive axle, the steering knuckle in particular, was busted loose the thing
    could slide right out.

    I'm hoping the squeak is at worst a hub- bearing, since you don't have to
    pull the whole flippin' left drive- axle out for that.

    Which you do apparently, apparently, have to do just to replace either
    flippin' boot on either end (inner or outer CV joint), which sounded
    totally insane to me the first time I read it, and still does, months
    later.

    Yes. But the other symptoms (like a flopped-over wheel) would override
    any axle related problems.

    Spindles hum/growl and are affected by turning forces (e.g. right turn
    no noise, hum while turning left or going straight) during the early
    phases. Spindle bearings don't squeal until the bearings are totally
    trashed and the lubricant is burned away. Usually there are premonitory
    symptoms that are hard to ignore like loud grinding noises and steering
    wheel vibrations. If you're persistent, things heat up and smell a bit
    before the really loud noises start in the terminal phase before lockup
    and separation (minutes to disaster at most). Vide infra.

    There are squealers built into the brake pad assembly to let you know
    they're worn. They are pieces of thin steel bent to contact the disks.
    Typically, the sound changes when the brakes are applied (can get
    louder or go away even) and may be affected by turns as well.

    Some high-performance pad materials can be a bit squeaky especially
    during light application of teh brakes. If you're not driving a cop
    car or something tweaked for the track, this is unlikely.

    Aw. It would add to teh coolness.

    I've a seen a wheel go by, from the very car I was riding in, on an
    Interstate highway, before.

    A moment of silence for the Ford Fairlane, that stable tank of a car.

    (And fairly decent off-road vehicle.)

    What's a spindle bearing? would that be the hub bearing, the cage bearing
    of the outer CV joint, the tripod bearing of the inner CV joint, or yet
    another bearing heard from? the steering- knuckle ball- joint maybe?

    No no no. Nothing like that.

    Braking doesn't affect _my_ left front wheel well area squeal.

    Acceleration is a definite fave.

    I started to say I don't use high- performance anything, but then I
    remembered the Great Concorde 2.7-L Trap, wherein both the owner's manual
    and the Haynes manual say you can use ordinary rather than high-
    temperature synthetic motor-oil, and you can't, unless you want to
    experiment with what happens when yer oil- channels sludge shut (for some
    reason the timing chain often snaps during the terminal event, sometimes
    hard enough to blow the cover off).

    I've read the design was computer-generated-- I mean, for real, not just
    CAD or preliminary or auxiliary modeling . . . .
