Almost no one wants taxes unless the target of the taxes is defined as someone other than themselves. Then it is a different story. You want more taxes but do you want more taxes on people who make what you make? And very little of the population wants cuts to things that they use...social security or medicare or tax credits or unemployment roads and highways or education or whatever it is. It is human nature really but eventually reality will smack us in the face if we can't go against it.
That was the point I was trying to make, that there are differing opinions on what is necessary. I never said all the spending was necessary though, that's just something you assumed I'd say I guess. The reality is that I have some things I'd like the government to spend money on, you probably have less things, other people may want more. The point was that we, as Americans, can't agree on what's necessary and what's not. Yep, it is. It's just as easy for you to state your beliefs. We're in different classes. I disagree that jobs will become more scarce under my proposal though. I'm certain there would be more jobs available, that the proposal wound increase the number of jobs in America, and improve the economy. I'm sure you disagree, but It comes down to greed. You say you've earned it and don't wanna share more than you already are, but I'd guess you'd prefer to keep most (if not all) of your hard earned money, right? Well, do you use the roads at all? Then you better cough up some dough to keep 'em repaired. Same can be said for the police department, fire department, parks, forests, etc. Basically you're paying for the benefits they provide. Don't forget our armies, they keep those Canadians from rampaging through your yard.... keeps them away from all your acquired loot. That costs money... cough it up. So yeah, you don't want to cough up the money for things you don't like, but too bad...you'd better... don't make me sic Canada on ya!
I love how you dodge the question & try to re-frame the argument. I'll ask again, if I pay 35% of my income to the federal government, why shouldn't you? I expect to pay more in terms of dollars but why is my percentage so much more? It doesn't really sound like a shared sacrifice when we put it in those terms, does it?
I'll pay more taxes... but unlike most people, I don't have a greed issue to overcome. I'd literally give you the shirt off my back, I can make something else to use if I get cold. But yeah, I can see why people want to keep their money, I just see it as greed or selfishness. I understand it (as human nature), but can't agree with it.
Why shouldn't I? I do (at about 21 to 23 %) but get most of it back when I file my taxes. It's 'cause I'm under the poverty line. You say you pay 35 % right? Are you neglecting to mention what you get back tax-time, or is that the final amount?
I have other assets, income & endeavours that generate income & are taxed at varying rates. I was merely referring to my job which is my main source of income. I am in the highest tax bracket & I pay my fair share, I do not get anything back. In fact, I am forced to pay a lot of money to a CPA to make sure I don't owe add'l tax at the end of the year. All thing considered, I pay nearly 1/2 of my income out in taxes (not counting sales tax paid at the retail level). Nw, what were you saying?
*BTW, the percentage I quoted is deducted from my wages and doesn't count slaes tax (MI = 6%). Assuming you added that to yours, as well as property and other taxes, mine would be roughly 27% to 29% compared to your 35%... unless I'm mistaken and you left those out of your total.
What's greedy about expecting the fruits of your labor to create a comfortable life for your family? Is it greedy to want better things for your kids than you had? Actually I would call it one's duty and responsibility to provide the best they can for their family. I made a conscious effort a long time ago to study a little longer, work a little harder, save a little more & make a few sacrifices along the way so that I could live a nice life and not have to rely on anyone else for support? Does that sound greedy or selfish? So, I'll ask again, why should I have to pay 35% and not you?
Would you say you live comfortably? That you are relatively safe from the fear of starvation or death (from lack of appropriate medical care due to insufficient monies)? If yes to both, good for you. Other people (myself included) say 'no' to those questions. You say that's too bad, right? I say the same thing to you when tax-time comes. Obama 2012
Once you're comfortable, you don't need any more. The desire for more than that is greed. I've answered once already. I do pay a similar amount, but receive it back so I don't die of starvation... or go on a rampage... I forget which one the government wants me to refrain from doing. I'm saying I don't appreciate you saying it's fine for me to die, I take that kinda personal
Think about what you have just said. Who gets to decide the definition of comfortable? What you are advocating is pure communism. Actually, I think it's fine for you to go out & earn your own way in life & stop living in that hammock that was originally designed as a safety net. ...and is it really paying your fair share of taxes when you just get it back (+ extra) at the end?
I have worked very, very hard & made tough choices to be able to say "yes". Yes, see above I don't say "too bad", I say put on your big boy pants and go out & earn your share, don't rely on the efforts of others to support you. You probably look forward to tax time because you'll "get a check". But did you earn that check? Is it fair for some to pay, while others don't? Is that "shared sacrifice" really? I listen to Dave Ramsey every morning on the way to work. He says a responsible adult gets up every morning, goes out & kills something (metaphorically speaking, of course) and drags it back to the cave. I do it. Most do it. Why don't you?
Yep, Communism gets a bad rap... Reagan's rantings didn't help... he was a *poof* I tell you what... If we change circumstances, I'll pay the taxes and be happy. You'll still be unhappy, but now you can keep that $700 and go nuts.
Want more? I give that check away, and don't keep a cent for frivolous purchases. Someone's still unhappy despite his successes... doesn't want to pay 'unnecessary' taxes... whaaaaaa
How about sending some cash to me? Whatever you feel is generous? I'll send the PO Box info to you, if you're feeling charitable.
Sure, I'll give you the gift that keeps on giving... as for the money? Nope. I think you're being greedy, don't need it, and don't deserve it.
The 'poverty line' should explain why your comments sound nuts. Most people understand that poverty is hard enough. But you rant on about how everyone should pay their fair share. It comes across like you hate poor people, when it's really about you not wanting to pay your fair share of taxes without whining about it to anyone that'll listen. Man the *poof!* up.
You're wrong about that. I'm not being greedy. I need a handout... desperately. Please send me some money if you're feeling charitable. Seriously, please!!! Don't tell me you're one of those armchair liberals who thinks its easy to tell everyone to give more, but when it comes to themselves, suddenly they turn a blind eye! IQless, please don't be that type of liberal... The Sean Penn-type or the Barbara Streisand-type! Dear God, don't be one of those! Send me some money, but only if you're feeling charitable. Thank you! I need, need, NEED it!!! Please!
Ok, I'll agree to take a look at your situation. If I find you are indeed in need, I will send you what I can... maybe $100 (I just won't eat as much for a while). Please PM me your last three tax-returns.
