Seemed straight forward enough. Why did Blondaemon have such an urge to
"bust his head open" for a solution?

I know you believe you understand what you think I said,
but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not
    what I meant.

I wasn't feeling too good myself after hacking around on it, even as
closely based on the K&R program as it is, and I don't know what the
problem was with the original code.

Still seems like black magic to me-- the condensation afforded by the
multiple recursions and overloadings is dazzling, and I doubt only one
person came up with the whole thing at once-- although I've been running
small sets of nodes at it and am beginning to come around a bit (it seems
to help me to try to actually visualize the--small--trees).

On the plus side, I'd never run tens or hundreds of malloc()s, even small
ones, at a time before, which is kind of engaging.
