Some great wines are indeed made in Amador County. El Dorado Home Winemakers won 42 percent of all the home winemaking medals and awards at the Amador County Fair in 2004. As they say, "Napa makes auto parts".

I have consumed my share of excellent English beers. I worked with an English expat for years, so it was Porter, IPA, bangers, and Monty Python behavior at the local micro-breweries whenever possible.

    I really dislike Belgian beers.

Did you know that an estimated 25 percent of all the employed brewers in the world are graduates of U.C. Davis? A public school, no less.

Beer in the USA is the pits. The bars are the pits compared to the drinking halls of Germany and Denmark.

The California wine in the USA is as good as any French Wine.
The only difference is the price and the attitude of the drinkers/sipers

European food varies from nation to nation whereas the United States food represents all the nations of the world and is cooked by representatives of all of those nations.
Fast Food is just that fast food and should not even be discussed.
However, our supermarkets and the choice of various and affordable food that we have is truly remarkable.
Now if one just shops in the frozen section that is their loss.
But if one wants to prepare their own meals, there is no limit of choices.
After all we have our own North American produce and livestock as well as South American imports filling our stores.

    Now for living conditions.
In the United States even those on Welfare have air conditioning for the summer, heat in the winter, wear brand name clothes and sneakers, have an apartment filled with TV's, CD'c, and DVD players and drive cars.

Why we even have a middle class here has two or three cars per household.

Europe is a wonderful place but the United States is still the land of plenty.

When all the rest of the prices of goods catch up with petrol, you may not be able to afford anything. :(

Do you think that is actually going to happen? I don't see any plausible way that would happen?

Hmm, which parts of Europe have you been to? Just wondering because in most German, Dutch, Belgian, etc. cities you find an amazing variety of "cuisines", from national/regional dishes to French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and so on and so on. Maybe you saw my side remark about döner kebap (or the Greek variety gyros) and pizza being the most popular fast food types in Germany. Apart from fast food, the most popular type of restaurant and cuisine over here is Italian. And if you look at the names of the owners and waiters, you will find a similarly wide variety.

One possible reason why some or many visitors from overseas do simply not notice that variety is that they are looking for what is "typically (insert nationality)". Nothing wrong with that IMO - I do pretty much the same when traveling: When I go to, say, Hungary, I would rather like to experience the "local" dishes instead of dining à la française or all'italiana. :D

I'd say it's a sin to try to look for food you are used to. The food in Europe is so delicious. The only reason I ate at mcdonald's one time over there was I was in a real hurry. In fact, it is worth visiting europe simply for the delicious food. mmmmm :D

Some of the best Pizza I have had was in Germany, but I haven't been to Italy yet.

Pastries are good just about anywhere, and Ice cream to die for.

Heh, one time I was in San Francisco, and had a day "by myself" before my American friend arrived. So there I was, walking along Market Street fairly late at night ... after a while I got a little hungry, but did not see many restaurants/eateries. Later I learned that this was just not quite the right area for the kind of meal I had in mind. Anyway ... where did I end up that night?

Taco Bell. Kind of shabby atmosphere, but the place was right where I was, and it was open ...

American fast food has to be some of the grossest food ever invented. No wonder Americans are fattest people on earth.

"Hmm, which parts of Europe have you been to? Just wondering because in most German, Dutch, Belgian, etc. cities you find an amazing variety of "cuisines", from national/regional dishes to French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and so on and so o" Christian.

I spent alot of time in Europe over the years for different reasons and I noticed over the years how other foods have entered europe, especially Africian and Turkish, but even with the larger selection it can not be compared to the major cities of the USA in variety and freshness of choices.
We are the food apex of the world,

For when I speak of food in the USA I am speaking about jumping into a jamaican kitchen for some jerk chicken, into a hatian cookery for some curry goat, into a Argentinean restaurant for some steak, a Bolivian food stand for some chicken tacos, a jewish deli for some pastrami, an ethiopian restaurant for some alechas and Injera, then there are the Szechuan-Hunan/Maderian/Cantonese chinese restaurants, Thai, Vietnamese, Polynesian restaurants and take-outs, never mind the european theme places and of course the Americana restaurants that serve Soul Food, Cajun, Southwestern, Californian, Colonial, Penn-Dutch, Steak and Rack of lamb houses, Barbecue Pits, etc.....And this is off the top of my head with the edit being that I almost forgot to mention that Schnitzel and sauerbraten are tops with me but I have simple tastes.

Depends on what part of the nation and ethnic group.

Sorry, emotion got the best of me. Just when did this topic become such a steady flow of U.S. bashing? When it comes to food, no other country can compare to the U.S. for variety and quantity and the ability to have whatever you want, how much you want and whenever you want it. Comes from hard work and being able to produce and feed not only this country, but the entire world. I guess that would make any other country jealous. I'll bet there's a few million or so out there that wish they were "fat" too.

I think to appreciate the variety of food in america you have to live in the city. Everywhere I ate in Europe was delicious, except for mcdonalds : ) In europe they have these candy bars, called bueno bars, they are my favorite candy bar. I love hazelnuts : )
