Yeah, normally. But in this case I'm being brought in as VP
over the head of the existing IT Mgr, after having worked under
him (in his mind, at least) for the last 8 months.

But it went reasonably well. He was pretty subdued and quiet
all day. I won't be surprised if he spends the evening updating
    his resume.

Right now I'm more concerned about Teh Little Guy - got the
report back on his latest blood work last nite, and his blood
sugar was up to 333. Not good...

The sports channels in my cable package are wasted on me. I never watch
them. Or the greed (shopping) channels, or the religion channels.

I don't know why we can't choose our own channel line-up. You know, like a
Chinese restaurant menu: 2 from column A, 3 from column B, none from channel
C, and so on. It'd make a whole lot more sense that being forced to pay for
channels we don't want, and not getting the ones we do want.

Of course this revolutionary idea would never fly with the cable companies.
    Makes too much common sense.

It's called a la carte cable, and there's a bill in Congress, feverishly
resisted by the cable TV industry . . . .

There'd still be a basic package, ie your local broadcast and educational
stations, a public message channel and a public access channel, the
C-Spans, and probably The Weather Channel, the TV n00z channelz (the CNNs,
MSNBC and even FauxNews) and (yes) ESPN and ESPN2 . . . .

Otherwise, you pick and pay for the channels you want, with no more
    bundled packages or tiers.

The cable industry claims that'd be death to the smaller-demand cable
channels; I don't know if that's true or not, but certainly wouldn't take
    their word for it.

And in any case cable TV and TV channels in their present senses, not to
mention telephony (and newspapers and magazines), aren't long for the
world, with the more or less complete Internetization of all the
electronic media at least well on the way, rolling ever more closely
behind fiber-optic and wi-fi distribution, but really needing the
increased throughput that will be afforded by the next couple of
generations of microprocessors and memory, mainstreaming heavy parallelism
(I suspect we've squeezed about all the performance we can from making a
single microprocessor as small as possible).

Bring on teh wristwatch TV and videophones!

(We're close as it is, although the quality's cheesy.)

When a system is set up to accomplish some goal, a
new entity has come into being--the system itself.
No matter what the "goal" of the system, it
immediately begins to exhibit system behavior; that
is, to act according to the general laws that govern
the operation of all systems. Now the system itself
    has to be dealt with.
