If I drop you (assuming an individual not trained in the job) into the middle of a 7-11 and you do that job, you probably have a great chance of lasting the night. If I drop you (assuming an individual not trained in the job) into the middle of a firefight in Fallujah and you do that job, you probably won't last to see the night. There are many different jobs in the military and they all have their different dangers, skills, training and equipment.
Here is one link to the 2004 Most Dangerous Jobs in the US: http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/26/pf/jobs_jeopardy/index.htm I don't see 7-11 clerk but that is besides the point. Now, in Iraq alone, there were 846 US military deaths in 2005. This does not include any military deaths anywhere else or any other military deaths not in Iraq in 2005. http://icasualties.org/oif/ The US has a military strength of 2,923,966 including all Active, Reserve, and Guard folks. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/end-strength.htm If I did the math correct (feel free to check it), that comes out to 28.93 Deaths per 100,000 military workers. (846/2,923,966)*100,000 = 28.93 That would place the generic military member at #9 on that list of most dangerous jobs I linked above. And, remember, this is just for deaths in Iraq in 2005 and does not include injuries in Iraq and does not include deaths or injuries that happened anywhere else that the 2.9 million military personnel are doing their jobs. It also does not discriminate between the combat soldier and the member handing out towels at the gym nor between Active, Guard and Reserve members. Now, are my calculation off in some way (I provided actual links to the figures used) or is it more of a "Studies lie and liars study" kind of thing?
You still do not get it Danr if it wasn't for all those Americans and foreign nationals who joined our armed services to get citizenship there would be no 7-11 for you to get your slurppie. There was never a time of peace and if you ever felt that you were living during a time of peace it was because of Americans who put their life on hold to go out and make this nation safe by keeping the bad guys at bay or under control. Once again all you do is attack what makes American great and one of the most importent things that makes this nation great are the men and women who served to insure that it exists. Nice Posts StuJoe.
Why not just put Danr, AKA John Kinckley on 'ignore' and cut off his means of 'self punishment'. The guy enjoys being beat and abused, and this is hiis way of getting his 'kicks'.
I am sure you could find a vet that was against fighting the Japs and Hitler too, so to say that all VETs are in total universal agreement about their actions in past and present wars...well, you made your point. I should have stated that the vast majority of vets agree that their mission is right and just, not everbody is in 100% agreement. I also agree their mission is right and just. They are on the front lines of islamic jihad and I am glad they are killing these animals there then here. There are front lines to all wars and I support the actions of our government to take this war to these miserable people's backyard instead of waiting for the next attack here. This has nothing to do with republicans or democrats...this has to do with the survival of western civilization. After all, you really think we could have forums like this one if islamic fundamentalists were in control?? Bottom line...I want our bombers 10 minutes away from these animals, not 10 days. You don't think there is a jihad going on, I do. Kill or be killed (unless you convert to islam)...obviously, you have made your choice. The actions of these people are very clear. They are just following the laws of islam...it is as simple as that.
Thanks. And, just for my own education, I also found a number for total military deaths in 2004 which was listed at 1887. http://web1.whs.osd.mil/mmid/casualty/Death_Rates.pdf (I like providing links to what is being discussed...it is a sickness ) Just including deaths from combat and accidents, the number of deaths is 1302. Using their figure of 1,711,916 Military FTE for the end strength, that equates to 76 deaths per 100,000 placing it #4 on the 2004 list. And again, that doesn't doiscriminate between the hundreds of different jobs performed in the military...some of which are extremely dangerous and others that are not nearly so.
Do any of the studies you quoted with 7-11 employees do statistical averaging over time? Can I get a link to the statistics you are using, btw? Be aware that, if you are using Dept of Labor statistics, I believe military jobs are lumped in to the data with their civilian counteparts and not broken out as a seperate entity, which would make your conclusion totally inconclusive. For example, a truck driver on a convoy in Iraq is lumped in with a truck driver hauling milk to Chicago. At least that is the impression I got when I looked over the DOL statistics. Maybe you are more expert in the area?
DANR, this is no link. For all I know 'Curious George or the Man in the Yellow Hat' came up with this list... B
Then you either using proganda to once again deride our military or you do not have a clue about the world you live in nor do you understand how the military has protected you during what you viewed as peace.
So tell me Midas - do you KNOW the vasy majority of vets? Have you polled the vast majority of vets? Is this what is known as 'republican facts'? And as long as we are talking facts, you have narrowly avoided the question for the third post in a row - why? I thought the question was fairly simple, but you have ignored it to restate the same thing, now, three different ways - why? I like the way you suggested that I am islamic with the whole 'obviously, you have made your choice' schtick - that was so clever it was almost cutesie. You should have finished your post with a smiley face and a 'Double Plus Good - LOL'. And what century are you living in where it takes a bomber 10 days to get from ANYWHERE to ANYWHERE else?
Wow, it's depressing when Americans accuse anyone that doesn't support the president unequivocally of being unpatriotic and unamerican. Welcome to the USSA!
You are right Bones, I would be rather skeptical of the list as presented. That is why I did a search and came up with a 'similar' but all to gather different list/survey conducted by the U.S. Dept. of Labor and reported on by MSN Money article:http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/invest/extra/P63405.asp 10 most dangerous jobs in America Domestic/indigenous On-the-job killers: Type of incident................................... 2002 deaths Aircraft accidents.................................... 192 Caught in running equipment..................... 110 Drowning............................................... 60 Electrocution.......................................... 289 Exposure to substances............................. 98 Falls from ladder ......................................126 Falls from roof .........................................143 Fires/explosions ......................................165 Highway collisions ...................................635 Assaults/violence/shooting ........................840 Jackknifed or overturned truck .................312 Overturned farm/industrial equipment .......164 Struck by falling/flying object ..................506 Struck by vehicle ..................................356 Suicides ...............................................199 I would have thought that John Hinckley (AKA Danr) would have been able to tell this was only applicable to domestic trades here in this country, and not the military. Unless you are a complete idiot you can see that our service people face many of these same dangers ever day in their activies during war time. So, now lets see how John lies his way out of this one!
