The person who said this knew what he was talking about because he was talking from experience, talking shop after a hasty retirement. We know he is right because of history.

Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. ...voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

This person was part of a movement that used this tactic and used it well. I hear this being used on AM radio, the internet, and talking heads, shouting and ranting. Nationalists (Youre a good american...no youre a good american) who cloak themselves in a flag and if youre not on board, you dont love america and you might be a:

    a. Socialist
    b. Leninist
    c. Stalinist
    d. Dont understand
    e. Drug addled
    f. Sodimite
    g. [insert some hyperbole of your own here]

This persons party said whatever they needed to say and would resort to literally any tactic that would get them what they wanted because this wasn't about political ideology but who gets it all. It wasnt 'agree to disagree, lets get a beer' it was 'Agree or else you are the enemy'. His party took everyone in certain groups of society and vilified them all as enemies within. I hear a lot of this these days.

This person was a patriot, from a good family, well enough educated, and a decorated war hero.
