this counrty should be a family with our democrate mother and republican father. we can learn alot from both of them if we stop the finger pointing and listen. every generation needs to learn from the past generation,take the good ideas and leave the bad. but this last decade the parents split up and refuse to work together on anything, who pays the price? us. all we hear from our republican father is how lazy and stupid our democrate mother is, and all our democrate mother says is how our republican father is a no good liar that picks fight with the neighbors.

if we keep this up this country will never move forward and anytime one brings up a way to fix things the other side will drag their feet in spite.

im sure someone here will say that "oh well thats what mt party does and its the other party that is dragging thier feet" well you know what if you say that then you are adding to the problem.

I know this is an old chestnut, at least the first half. But it is confusing.

I'm assuming we mean that Liberal as defined as doing things to improve the lot of the common man.

I'm also assuming we mean Conservative as defined as doing things to improve the lot of the common man.. unless we are saying doing things to improve my own lot.

I always thought that the leftwing gave liberals a bad name when they started calling themselves liberal. One needs to be liberal minded yet grounded( conservative). There is nothing wrong in my book with being both depending on the issues and what the times dictate what is needed.

I am sure that Harrison Ford would agree.

Here's my understanding of Liberalism and Conservatism:

Liberalism is split between two groups, Classic Liberalism and Modern Liberalism, and then there's Traditional Conservatism. The other name for Classic Liberalism is Classic Liberal Conservatism. In today's terms, when we say 'liberal' we mean Modern Liberalism, and when we say 'conservative' we mean Classic Liberal Conservatism OR Traditional Conservatism, based on the context.

Classic Liberalism (C.L.Conservatism): based on John Locke's principles saying that people are rational. Then, being rational, people can make decisions which are rational and which will benefit them to make the most of their lives and do well for themselves, their families, and their communities (the "greater good"), which will then make the country better. Locke also says that CL (CLC) is based on the premise that the INDIVIDUAL should trump the institution of "big government" - in essence, government should be decentralized from the big 'entity' that it is in Washington, and more power should be given to local community governments, state, governments, and ultimately, each individual.

Modern Liberalism: basically the 'old' conservatism, in that government officials must 'conserve' a lot of power for themselves because the individual is irrational, and, being irrational, cannot make decisions that affect the greater good. This is why modern liberalism under current Democrats in public office have seeked to expand their powers (like Clinton's line item veto power) to be able to govern the populace more closely. This philosophy seeks to centralize power, rather than decentralize it.

Traditional Conservatism: the philosophy that seeks no change at all, because the long-standing traditions of the people, based on faith in a higher power, will ultimately guide policy and politics to reach a true and just end. This philosophy advocates 'freedom with boundaries' by which the people should be free, but not to the extent that they are being immoral/indecent/etc. One of the groups most closely associated with TC is the Christian Coalition, which embraces: 1) antiabortion policy, 2) opposition to gay rights, including gay marriage and civil unions, 3) support for public/school prayer, 4) opposition to any kind of sex education in public schools except abstinance, and 5)oppostion to sidewalk sales of pornography, among other things.

These are the ideological definitions of the major ideologies governing the American people. I am personally a Classic Liberal Conservative. How do you all define yourselves?

Funny thing today is the association with Liberals = Dems, and Conservative = Republican. In the 1930's, the roles were reversed. It'll all change again when it is no longer "profitable" for the Reps to be conservative or visa versa.

 

Its always easy to spout off "great ideas" when you leech off your rich wifes money and don't have a clue what it is to work every day just to make ends meet and definitely don't have a clue how to run a buisness. I'd be VERY leary of Kerry and his "ideas". Just look at the $14.2 billion dollar hole in the ground in Boston that occurred under his watch. Would you REALLY want to trust someone that prone to corruption organizing a national health care plan.

Next thing your going to tell me Kerry would have done a better job as the head of FEMA. He would have made Brown look like Einstein.

Individual liberty maximized sounds great but does that include porn access on the internet, child porn access on the internet, etc...That is where the conservative groundness aspect comes in. I thought I was communicating that it is good to be liberal minded, open to change and wanting to maximize individual liberty, but also to be grounded with Conservative views to make sure that the change is good.

 

well personally I believe that a "person" is rational, and a person can make knowledgable choices as you have described. "People" on the hand are not rational, (and tend to bounce off walls and create riots) .

So in a perfect world, I would agree with Jefferson and Locke. On the other hand, I find myself more in agreement with Franklin Roosevelt (Big Government - Knowledgable "Person" in charge).

You have a pretty dim view of college kids and you also butchered Winston Churchill's words pretty badly. I live in a college town and whereas I probably complain too frequently about the way they drive, I have seldom if ever been inspired to up-chuck over their bumper stickers...No matter how conservative I find them.
My wife is a professor here and she has had students come into her office and ask her to pray with them for divine guidance in seeking better grades. As far as I can tell, they aren’t gonna get them using their intelligence. They are extremely conservative students and mostly clueless individuals. Come to think of it, THEY could make me blow lunch.

P.S. What do you think would happen if George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton had a debate?
