Romania and Bulgaria are two of the poorest countries in the EU. Their acceptance into the EU five years ago is still causing angst among the more wealthy member countries. One issue is Schengen, the EU passport-free travel zone. The argument is that illegal immigrants from Greece now have greater access to the rest of the EU, through Romania and Bulgaria. Apparently the rest of the world understands the problem of illegal immigration. Now if we could just get the libs to understand......
My interests are varied, as such I tend to know a little about a lot of things, some things more than other things of course. I've had passing interest in Romania and Bulgaria for many years, as well as every other country, but my knowledge base has been limited by what was available to me in affordable print and video formats. The internet is allowing me to explore those interests in a far more educational way and I thought this story would have some interest with others. That said, I'm also focusing my attention on Moldova, which I believe is even more poor a nation. It's located North of Romania and isn't a factor with the EU's issues of Schengen with Greece.
If I remember correctly bulgaria and romania were allies with the germans during world war two and the women of Moldova which is slavic and very much russian in the ones that I met in eastern europe back in the early 1980;s were beautiful.
All are located in an interesting geographic area, bordering major powers vying for control of the regions. More or less they've had the Christians to the West, the Soviets to the North, the Arabs and Muslims to the East and South through much of their history, being repeatedly conquered and controlled by numerous powers. But my knowledge of that stuff is pretty limited.
Thankfully that is one bit of stupidity we Brits did not sign up to, yep you still have to show your passport here even if you are a EU citizen, recently France had a clamp down and closed it's border crossings (It is a member of the plan) due to the massive influx of those trying to escape the Mid East (Egypt/Lybia etc) and landing on Italian soil.
