In response to the Occupy movement & the hangers-on in the Flea Party, a new movement has resulted...the 53%ers. They are advocates for the 53% of the population who are actually paying taxes.
The problem with having an actual "53% Rally" is that no one would be able to attend because they'd be at work.
Actually 51% of people in this country pay no income tax. If you total the entire wealth of the 51% it accounts for 2% of the country's wealth. Do you want that 2% too? Oops! View attachment 286

Translation; 50% of people in this country wanted everything NOW! They had no idea how to save. Therefore, because I was smart enough to live within my budget, you think I ought to pay for those who were fools enough to over spend.
Let's try an alternate translation. One based in reality and not the Right-wing propensity for blaming the elderly that are on Social Security, the working poor, and low-income people with children. Why don’t these people pay Federal Income Taxes keeping in mind we are only talking about Federal Income Taxes and ignoring state and local taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, etc.... Reason People don’t pay Federal Income Taxes. The number one reason should come as no surprise. It’s because they have low incomes. As my colleague Bob Williams notes: A couple with two children earning less than $26,400 will pay no federal income tax this year because their $11,600 standard deduction and four exemptions of $3,700 each reduce their taxable income to zero. The basic structure of the income tax simply exempts subsistence levels of income from tax. Low incomes (or, if you prefer, the standard deduction and personal exemptions) account for fully half of the people who pay no federal income tax. The second reason is that for many senior citizens, Social Security benefits are exempt from federal income taxes. That accounts for about 22% of the people who pay no federal income tax. The third reason is that America uses the tax code to provide benefits to low-income families, particularly those with children. Taken together, the earned income tax credit, the child credit, and the childcare credit account for about 15% of the people who pay no federal income tax. Taken together, those three factors — incomes that fall below the standard deduction and personal exemptions; the exemption for most Social Security benefits; and tax benefits aimed at low-income families and children — account for almost 90% of the Americans who pay no federal income tax.
You should feel lucky... especially since there isn't a *poof*-tax. You'd be paying through the nose. ..."over spend"... what a *poof*...
The Right-winger talking point never seems to include the important distiction between "Federal Income Tax" and all the rest of the taxes we all pay. That is a bit convenient. Watch any RW cable show or listen to any RW radio program and you'd be lucky to hear them preface the word "Tax" with the correct term "Federal Income" Tax. Let's go after the 2% at the bottom but ignore the 2% at the top. That makes perfect sense.
I'm a supporter of taxes, and I think of America lowering taxes as America shooting itself in the foot. Local, state, and federal taxes are important in keeping our country healthy. The lower the taxes get, the more you have to cut programs. Republicans seem to think we can afford to lose them, but look at the news... what's being cut? Some cities police departments are no longer responding to domestic assault complaints (as well as other incidents). In another city the electricity bill wasn't being payed so the electric company repossessed the traffic lights. Is this what the Republicans want? Expect more of these kinds of cuts if they manage to gain any more ground politically.
But taxes are for little people. The problem with progressive tax rates is that they ask more from the rich. In RW eyes it should be the other way around. The more money you make the more virtuous you are and the greater your value to society. Virtue should be rewarded. If you're not making the bucks you are by definition a slouch and probably have a bad attitude and God might not even like you. Why should you pay lower taxes for this?
God told me specifically to advocate taxes on the rich... he was a bit drunk at the time but he said it was cool since I beat him in poker and he owed me.
Actually, in a fair tax system, everyone would be expected to contribute. This is a common far left lie. The problem is with folks who choose not to earn and want everyone else to pay their share. This, of course, causes everyone else to have to pay more. I can think of one example of this on this forum.
But aren't federal taxes really what we are discussing when the subject is who does & who does not pay taxes? If you want to include all taxes, I pay over 50% of my earnings in taxes!
You didn't say the 53% of the population that actually pay Federal Income Tax you just said the 53% of the population who are actually paying taxes. This Right-wing meme tries to refocus the attention from those that make extraordinary incomes and pay a small percentage of their income in taxes to the very poor, elderly on Social Security, and the working poor with children because they don't earn enough to have to pay Federal income taxes. Why, in any conceivable scenario, would we want to focus on the people struggling to get by whose combined wealth represents 2% of the county's wealth and 50% of the population? It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever but works as a convenient talking point for those who are extremely susceptible to talking points. Is going after the bottom 50% seriously going to make any difference at all other than to cause the elderly on fix incomes, the working poor, and families with children lives even harder?
Let me ask you brainiacs if you would like to see Herman Cains' 9-9-9 plan go into effect? Would you see this as a good thing or a bad thing? It's a simple enough idea that establishes a 9 percent corporate tax, (down from approx. 35%) 9 percent income tax (FICA is currently 7.65%) and a new 9 percent national sales tax (Currently there is no Federal sales tax), so if your current state has a 9% sales tax already, you'd be paying 18% sales tax on everything. So in effect, Cain's 9-9-9 plan reduces corporations taxes 75% while you and I would pay an additional sales tax of 9% on top of our current state and local sales taxes plus another 1.35% in FICA taxes. Those of you that are cheerleaders or the wealthy will absoluetely love paying these additional taxes so that the struggling corporations can afford to ship even more of the jobs they are creating overseas.
You've said you're in the highest tax-bracket, so you make a lot of money. And you can still afford a house (or multiple homes), a car (most likely several), charities (as you've stated repeatedly). Face it, you just don't want to pay your taxes.
