See, this is how we know this administration is racist. I promise you it is no accident that a report downplaying slavery and attacking the civil rights movement was released on MLK day. 2 more days... Full report can be found here On civil rights: On slavery:
I think that the slave trade, and it was literally trading in human lives, was not just some part of our past and the past of many countries, it has consequences that reverberate well past the abolition of slavery. We have to recognize that we have made progress and that the progress needs to continue. As horrible as slavery was, it is a part of who we are because it created a schism between those that inflicted slavery on this country and those there were slaves that has yet to be reconciled. Downplaying our own history will only cause the echoes of the past to ring further into the future.
How fair and balanced . . . from one who wishes to forget the contributions of past great leaders of this nation, yet somehow foist their wrongs onto others of future generations.
I don't believe I said any such thing. The past is what it is great or bad. It all makes us what we are today. Sanitizing the past serves only those wishing to pretend the bad didn't happen.
How far do you take that? Does Rome owe western Europe pittance for conquering them two and half millennia ago and subjecting the able bodied men to bloodsport to entertain their posh society? Should homo-sapiens be downtrodden for eliminating cro magnon and neanderthal man?.... The problem with all this is that we want to view the wrongs of the past from a 21st century perspective. And it just don't work out that way. History is absolutely awash with misdeeds when viewed from a 21st century perspective. That is why it is called history. We learned from it. We grew a better civilization from it. There is not one soul walking this earth today that has suffered from slavery no more than there is one that suffered at the hands of the Romans.
I don't hate you, I weep for our ignorance as a country. How can people be alive as long as you have and be so bereft of intellect?
I too thought I knew everything when I was a young man. Thank heavens I matured and learned humility.
