If You’re Upset About Obama’s Golf Game, Here’s Reagan Goofing Off During Major Events
    08/25/2014 09:11 pm ET | Updated Oct 25, 2014

A particularly intolerable meme continues to play out in the news media and online: Apparently U.S. history began on January 20, 2009, when Barack Obama was inaugurated. In case you were unaware, President Obama is evidently the first president to take vacations; he’s the first president to play golf; he’s the first president to be photographed without a suit or tie; and he’s the first president to routinely use a teleprompter. If you believe any of that, then you’re a moron who needs to crack a good book — anything prior to the events of 2009 will do. There you’ll find that not only are Obama’s vacations and so forth in line with most previous presidents, but in terms of overall time off, he’s taken the fewest vacation days of any modern president other than Bill Clinton.

As reported recently by The Daily Banter‘s Tommy Christopher and Michael Luciano, the latest round of outrage directed at the president has to do with his so-called “bad optics” — inappropriate, non-presidential behavior. In this latest case, Obama’s crazy decision to remain on vacation following the horrifying beheading of American journalist James Foley. A cursory check of AM talk radio, Fox News Channel and conservative Twitter reveals the usual double standard and historical amnesia we’ve seen over and over again.

So, in the interest of history and the obvious inability of Republican concern-trolls to actually do the research themselves, I decided to set the way-back machine to the beloved Ronald Reagan presidency. Here’s a series of harrowing events from the 1980s, along with the comparatively AWESOME optics from Reagan, the now-sainted chief executive. The photographs are all from the specified dates.

EVENT, October 10, 1981 — The funeral of assassinated Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

REAGAN OPTICS, October 10, 1981 — Reagan went horseback riding at Camp David.

EVENT, August 29, 1983 — Two Marines were killed and 14 wounded in Beirut.

REAGAN OPTICS, August 29, 1983 — Reagan remained on vacation at Rancho Del Cielo, California.

EVENT, September 1, 1983 — Reagan was still on vacation in California when the Soviets shot down Korean Airlines Flight 007.

REAGAN OPTICS, September 1, 1983 — According to Fox News Channel’s Chris Wallace, as well as contemporaneous accounts, Reagan planned to remain on vacation until he was photographed horseback riding and was convinced to return to the White House.

The Washington Post, 9/4/83 — At this point, [Press Secretary Larry] Speakes was interrupted and asked if Reagan was going back to Washington. He ignored the question and read a statement on the Middle East. Asked again if Reagan was going back to Washington, Speakes answered, “There are no plans for the president to return to Washington earlier than anticipated.”

FOX NEWS CHANNEL’S CHRIS WALLACE: I was covering Ronald Reagan at that time. He was in Santa Barbara at his ranch when that happened, and quite frankly he didn’t want to leave. And his advisers realized how terrible this looked, and eventually persuaded him he had to fly back to Washington and had to give this speech to the nation, but it did take him four days.

EVENT, October 22, 1983 — The administration began planning its military incursion into Grenada.

REAGAN OPTICS, October 22, 1983 — Reagan remained on vacation at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. Repeat: golf resort. Here are three strikinglypresidential photos from Augusta — the golf resort! First, Reagan in his jammiesbeing briefed on the Grenada plans, then, later hitting the links. Where were the Republicans of 2014 to scold him?

President Reagan was still on vacation at the GOLF! resort the next day when the Marine barracks in Beirut were bombed, killing 241 Marines.

EVENT, July 18, 1984 — 21 people were killed and 19 wounded when a gunman entered a San Ysidro, California McDonald’s and opened fire.

REAGAN OPTICS, July 21, 1984 — On the day when many of the gun massacre victims were to be buried, Reagan went horseback riding at Camp David.

EVENT, April 2, 1986 — Four Americans were killed in a terrorist attack at a TWA counter at the Athens Airport, Greece.

REAGAN OPTICS, April 4, 1986 — Two days later, here’s Reagan’s uber-presidential optics, while on vacation (!!) at Rancho Del Cielo:

EVENT, September 5, 1986 — The Pakistani military stormed the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73. Twenty-two people were killed, including two Americans, and 150 were injured.

REAGAN OPTICS, September 6, 1986 — Again, while on vacation at his California ranch, Reagan went horseback riding with the First Lady and was photographed with a “Just Say No” sign.

    Presidential optics! Any questions?

    Yeah, a few.

President Obama was on a diplomatic mission in Cuba when the attacks occurred in Belgium. Was President Reagan ever on a diplomatic mission when something like that occurred?

Also, two presumably U.S. citizens were injured in the recent attacks in Belgium. As noted in your post, hundreds of U.S. citizens, mostly marines, were killed and injured and President Reagan chose to remain on vacation. The reactions from republicans to President Obama continuing his diplomatic mission in Cuba is one of outrage yet, he wasn't on vacation, like President Reagan was, time and time again during moments where U.S. citizens where attacked abroad. If President Obama had been on vacation during the recent attacks in Belgium, and not on a diplomatic mission, should I give a fuck that republicans are outraged?

One last question: Why do republicans suck?

    Thanks.

I don't recall President Reagan ever laughing and yukking it up with a Communist dictator while Brussels was being bombed.

BTW, Pres. Osama spent the night doing the tango in Argentina. He's having quite the fun trip.

I have never seen our president travel anywhere without immediately being subjected to Right-wing hate rhetoric for doing so. Big deal.

I suppose Obama's strategy for fighting ISIS in the wake of the attacks in Brussels is to sashay the night away doing the tango in Argentina. Liberals must think that's a brilliant strategy.

While Belgium Grieves and Authorities Search for Terror Accomplices, Obama Does the Tango ... Where's the American Leadership in the War on ISIS?

    March 24, 2016

In Brussels police are still desperately hunting a dangerous terrorist after he fled a triple-suicide bombing in the city that left 34 dead, as officials search for news on U.S. citizens who went missing during the attack and medics tend to nine more Americans lying wounded in hospitals.

Meanwhile in Buenos Aires President Barack Obama was dancing the night away with wife Michelle at a glitzy state dinner alongside Argentine President Mauricio Macri and his first lady Juliana Awada as part of a two-day state visit.

Despite increasing calls from the likes of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz for the President to return home in the wake of the Brussels attack, Obama showed his determination to carry on regardless Wednesday night.

At the end of the state dinner, the Obamas were pulled abruptly onto the dance floor by a pair of Latin dancers providing the entertainment.

At first, the woman in the shimmering gold dress seemed content to twirl with her partner, but then she made a beeline for the president and beckoned him to the floor. The president, who has been known to break into song on occasion but has rarely shown off his moves, declined her invitation several times, but she wasn't to be deterred and she soon had him sashaying across the floor. It was unclear if the slightly clunky President had been having lessons. Mrs. Obama meanwhile tangoed with the male dancer nearby.

This morning pundits – both liberal and conservative – complained about the optics the sultry dance sent out to the rest of the world.

On Morning Joe, Richard Haass, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations praised Argentina for its democratic transition of power and thought Obama right in paying the South American country a visit, according to Politico.

'They're doing the right things economically, they're doing the right things politically, it's a good story,' Haass said.'However the advance person who let him do the tango, that person ought to be looking for work on somebody's – in somebody's campaign very, very far away.'

'That was a tremendous mistake,' he continued. 'It's fine to go to Argentina, you want to do the work, but you've got to be careful of these little photo ops and optics. Baseball games and tangos, that's inconsistent with the seriousness of the day.'

The more liberal co-host Mika Brzezinski thought the whole thing 'really strange to me.'

Nicolle Wallace, the former communications director for President George W. Bush, called the double insult of the tango and the baseball game a 'communications crime.'

Wallace called the moves 'out of step with the entire American public, not just Republicans.'

Meanwhile, Brussels is grieving their terrible loss of life and ISIS has declared war in Europe.

Even liberal Piers Morgan wonders what the hell "Twinkle-Toes Obama" was doing watching baseball in Cuba and dancing the tango in Argentina while Brussels experienced its equivalent of 9/11.

Twinkle-toes Obama might be a demon at the tango but when it comes to reading the public mood he’s tone-deaf

What the hell is wrong with Barack Obama?

Why does he not seem to have a clue how to behave when major atrocities happen around the world?

The ISIS terror attacks on Brussels were Belgium’s 9/11.

Belgium is a long-time loyal U.S. ally and fellow member of NATO.

Obama, in his capacity as President of the United States, is supposed to be ‘leader of the free world’ and therefore, de facto, leader of NATO.

That alone should have demanded he immediately abandon his jolly in Cuba, where he is cosying up to a dictatorship, and return to Washington to lead the global response with a powerful statement from the Oval Office.

Particularly as up to a dozen Americans were wounded in Brussels, and for all he knew, possibly dead. One U.S. couple is still missing and unaccounted for.

    But Obama had other ideas.

He stayed in Cuba, made a cursory 1-minute statement about the Brussels bombings, then went to the baseball at Havana’s Latinoamericano stadium.

Even more extraordinarily, once he was there he allowed himself to be filmed laughing and joking with Raul Castro, the pair of them raising their arms in a joyful crowd wave.

This, surely, was outrageously insensitive to the grieving people of Belgium, not to mention the families of those wounded and missing Americans?

As former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani put it: ‘You don’t send a picture of yourself laughing while people have just been blown up at a level that is the equivalent of September 11 to one of our allies.’

When asked what difference it would have made if Obama had cancelled his South American tour, Giuliani explained: ‘The difference is that it would have made people feel that he’s a leader, that he’s in charge. This would be like Franklin Roosevelt remaining at Warm Springs when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour.’

    Exactly.

BTW, the latest guesses are that 4 Americans died, but the explosion was so strong there are no bodies - just pieces or vapor in some cases.
