i bought coins on ebay form some old dude and i get 1892 3 and one cent stamps on the box, regardless i peeled them off REALLY carefully (like handling a REALLY OLD coin with your bare hands) and am looking at a price to sell them for =).
I think it may pay for the ebay bill it self, S&H and all.

tips on getting them off? I was thinking of putting the whole thing in the kitchen sink or bathtub.

You could try the bathtub and dry the stamp between two heavy books like the history of the world and the detailed index to mistakes made by George W. Bush (put the second one on top for extra flattenning) or if that doesnt work just cut it off very carefully.
Mine just came off basically. So, i wouldnt have experience.

Either the stamps are not worth anything or they didn't know that were. It is silly what some people will throw away because it is old not knowing that it is really worth something.

    Worth... is relative.

I'm not sure how much these stamps are worth.

But given their age, I would assume they're worth *at least* more than 3 cents. No?

I collect stamps and had my collection appraised one time. I have sheets of 50 of each of the stamps you have on your envelope. The appraiser told me to use them for postage. Now, these are sheets of 50 that have never been attached to anything and they are only useful to post letters with.
Stamps do not increase in value like coins do. Granted there are a couple of rare ones but you'd know if you had one and so would the person sending the package. Your stamps don't even have postal value anymore. Sorry.

I use stamps that date back into the 1930's on mail whenever there is enough space on the envelope. I usually can buy sheets for 20% less than face value.

The problem is that stamp sheet collecting was promoted as an investment in the 1950's and, as usual, when something is promoted as an investment, it won't be.

I always ask the ebay seller to use traditional postage stamps on mailing package whenever possible (because i absolutely hate that self-adhesive crap "stamps" and mailing labels they are using all over).

The other day I got this from a US seller. Needless to say I was absolutely delighted. Not only are they old stamps, but also they are still attached with each other and all of them contain the full cancel. I now have the dilemma of keeping them as a full pane of stamps. (note the magenta one is a pane of 4)

I thought many numismatists are also philatelists, like myself. That's why I'm shocked when some suggested to peel off the stamps off an envelope!

Philately definitely has its value. I was putting together a database for my stamp collection and casually checked out the values for some of my stamps. I discovered this 20 Tanzania Shilling stamps (about 2 cent Canadian in face value) from 1987 (pretty recent) has appreciated in value 32800% even in it's used condition. It is now worth 7.30 Canadian Dollars according to the online version of the 2004 Stanley Gibbons Catalogue.
