CraigG "If? Hmm... What if some terrorists smuggle a dirty bomb into America and detonate it? What if Iran bombs Israel with nuclear weapons and then attacks America? What if North Korea hits us with nuclear tipped ICBMS. What if somebody crashes a plane into the White House? These are all very real threats, but I don't worry about them much. The bird flu thing is a scam, and I don't worry about it at all. Unless the government decides to help it along to get us even more scared..." what if someone like Craig had a postion of political power??? now thats scary
Probability. There may be fifty kinds of flu and cold viruses going around during the "season". Federal epidemiologists contract corporations to develop vaccines for specific virus strains that they believe will be the most virulent and widespread. There is little doubt that thousands of lives are saved by the CDC and associated flu vaccination programs. Cops wear bullet-proof vests, but there are still cop killings. Probability.
Well I work at the nation's busiest border crossing, and I can tell you after sitting in staff meeting after staff meeting. "We take this very very seriously"
Bird flu aint the prob. The problem (in terms of world health) will be something much more fearsome coming out of Africa. There are millions of AIDS patients in Africa each is a living lab for all manner of evil health problems. We could prevent these problems and guys like Bill Gates and Bono are trying. Bush is an idiot with all of his squaking about bird flu.
Danr one of the first postings that I read from you was talking about how Bush needs to address the bird flu and that was the real threat and not the muslims. I am sure if you look back at your past posts you will find it. QuickDog, I take any virus seriously. Those RNA life forms are the true alliens living upon our planet. However, I think that the risk of getting mercury into my body from the thermosal that is used as a preservative in the flu vaccine is not worth it since the vast, vast majority of flu vaccines are useless. Think about how many times you heard about someone still getting the flu after getting vaccinated. Think back to President Ford and his massive Swine Flu vaccination program and how people started to die from the vaccine. Now there are many wonderful vaccines out there, especially since the thermosal was taken out most of them in the past few years. However, in my mind the flu vaccine is not one of them. Containment seems to be the method of choice around the world when the bird flu has an outbreak. I would however recommend everyone to take measures to boost their immune system.
Weird humor. I got my flu shot a month ago and as usual I still got ill, albeit not as bad as it could be. Anyway, I fell asleep on the couch and (this part was told to me) my youngest daughter went out to the chicken coop to get the eggs (yes, we, got one ) and brought in a small feather stuck to her jacket. My wife (deviant) decided to play a prank on me and gently pricked my ear with a toothpick which woke me rather quickly. She then started acting all concerned and pretended to be on the phone with the doctor. After hanging up she showed me the feather and said it had been growing out of my ear, and she'd plucked it off hmm...
It is likely I included bird flu in a list but my big issue has been the AIDS and other ugly stuff in Africa (I figure if a guy like Gates is worried about it I should too). To pick out bird flu above AIDS in Africa and focus more funding on bird flu than on African health problems is a mistake. I wrote that the bird flu aint THE problem not that it isn't not A problem. As for Bush Squaking like an idiot I am refering to him picking out this health problem (which is real) and acting as if it were the only health threat. I STILL MAINTAIN THAT GLOBAL HEALTH ISSUES ARE MORE OF A REAL THREAT THAN ISLAM, though your efforts are not in vain I am more suspicious of Islam than I was before I read your posts.
I would thing that sooner or later people would catch on to the reason for all of these "deady threats." Do you remember: - Ebola - Y2K - Anthrax - Communism - the domino theory - Mutually Assured Destruction [MAD] - AIDs [also originally said to inevitably mutate into an airborne virus] - SARS - new ice age [1970s] - global warming [1990s] - mad cow disease - genetically engineered foods - flouride in the water - Three Mile Island - solar flares - pesticides - Lyme disease - West Nile Virus - radon - second-hand smoke - ozone hole Here in New Jersey in the 1990s we actually had to endure the "egg police." Undercover police went into diners and restaurants writing fines for folks who ordered eggs sunny side up, thus irresponsibly exposing themselves to the potential for deadly salmonella poisoning. Fortunately, that was too much for even the gullible people in NJ to put up with, so it didn't last long. and now... - terrorism - bird flu pandemic All of these things were good for an overreaction. Every one of them undoubtedly hurt some people. Who knows what will be next?! There's always going to be someone somewhere trying to frighten everyone because there is some money, power, or ego reward if they can convince enough people with half-plausible-not-entirely-impossible-terrifying scenarios that's just going to kill all of us unless we do whatever we are told must be done [which usually involves giving enormous power and money to someone someplace]. Bad things will happen in the world. Always have and always will. But I think it's a bit early to call this a pandemic, throw tens of billions of dollars at it, and redirect medical research projects to find a "cure" or preventative vaccine when there doesn't appear to have been a single human-to-human transmission of the disease. Asian chicken ranchers catch things from close contact with infected birds. American ranchers have been catching anthrax infections from cattle for a couple of centuries. In a few years, bird flu will be out of the news and we'll be paying to keep the next monster from destroying us. That's something you can count on.
OVER POPULATION WILL BE THE END OF US ALL!!!! :loud: in one way or another this will be the end of man. if it be war for land and resources. the lack of clean drinking water. pandemics.
Aids could end in one generation. Everyone gets tested. If a person has it, no sex and they keep their blood to themselves. End of problem. Bono is the idiot by the way. Helping out brutal dictatorships by basically letting them borrow billions of dollars and having us pay it off. Look deeper into the story then the headline on entertainment tonight. Bill Gates only started to throw money around after the Fed suit. See the connection. Bush can not win with the left. The left screams for money, Bush gives money, the left still screams.
Cuba ended AIDS quick, there is no such thing as AIDS in Cuba, but the trade off is that they have no freedom. The point is that these unattended AIDS victims are the breeding ground for all sorts of nasties. Their bodies become living labs to develop possibly devasting new illnesses. As for Gates I do not care about the reason he is helping, he has probably saved our butts a few times already with his efforts in third world health (Gates does not throw money around, he is very careful with his giving, it is his nature).
"Cuba now has one of the very lowest Aids infection rates in the world." There are a few cases but they are aggressive about stamping it out. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3154803.stm Google it and you will find more.
I agree with the premise that there are those who have made financially successful careers of applying the Chicken Little philosophy. I also agree that there are Political Action Committees that routinely create bogus environmental threats. However, of the list presented above, there are a few legitimate environmental and medical problems there. Mutually Assured Destruction [MAD] - was a serious issue. AIDs - How is this not a serious threat? Global Warming [1990s] - a natural process and political tool of the Left Solar flares - A real issue, natural process, and related to global warming Pesticides - Misuse of pesticides was a huge problem, and still exists to a lesser degree West Nile Virus - Serious issue in the San Joaquin Valley I would agree that the rest of your examples were largely, or completely, propoganda issues used by individuals and groups for political or financial advantage. There is good evidence that both American shuttle disasters were the result of political actions taken by the EPA.
"Global Warming [1990s] - a natural process and political tool of the Left" this is one those thing where it would be better to prepare and be wrong than do nothing and get caught with out any options if it does happen. and hurricane epsilon is proof that things are getting worse(natural or man made)
No it's not. The hurricane season we've had is no worse than the one we had in the 1920's and 1930's. These things are cyclical. Besides, all evidence suggest that even if global warming was occuring in the tmepearate areas of the world, it would actually REDUCE severe weather, not increase it, as the differential between warm and cold air would be a lot less. As for your first statement... if no problem exists it would be a tremendous waste of resources to try to prevent or cure a non-existant problem that could instead be applies to proven and immediate problems instead. You eant to tell people dying of starvation and disease "sorry, can't afford to help you, we spent all our money trying to take care of a problem that hasn't even been proven to exist yet"? I would suggest that's not really a better thing to do than nothing.
