Hard to believe it was 25 years ago that his flame was snuffed out by one deranged lunatic that had just asked for and received an autograph. If you were old enough, where were you when you heard about it?
When I woke up the morning of Dec. 9th, my mother told me that one of the Beatles had been killed the night before. I read the newspaper and I was completely devastated. To this day, I still find it hard to believe. I'll be playing Beatles and John Lennon songs all day tomorrow. R.I.P. John Lennon
Watching Monday Night Football in my dorm room when Howard Cosell announced the news during the game. He was the "rock" in the Beatles.
I was at a birthday party for a friend of mine, she is today 33 years old, when we saw a flash on the news about John Lennon being shot.
I was driving home from the U of Minn and heard it on the radio. My wife (not at the time) was away in New York visiting her aunt and participated in the candle lighting outside the Dakota where Lennon was shot. I almost had to pull over along the freeway when I heard the news. It's a moment I have never forgotten.
I was stationed at Ft. Monmouth at the time, and I_did have to pull over on the highway when I found out.
I guess you youngsters need to look up to someone, so it might as well be someone who represents that era from which most of you were reared. So here is to John Lennon, may he rest in peace. Now how about the other people who passed away during the year 1980? You know there were some fairly well know men who kicked the bucket that year. Jimmy Durante, Alfred Hitchcock, Jesse Owens and last but far from least,,, Colonel Harland Sanders. I'll bet most of you don't know at least one of these and what they were known for.
Just because we young whippersnappers haven't made icons out of the aforementioned doesn't mean we don't know who they were. Each of the persons you've mentioned contributed in their own way to society. But, cliche'd as it may sound, John Lennon truly was the voice of a generation. His music, attitude, beliefs, style and charisma changed popular culture. Yeah, the same could probably be said for Frank Sinatra (whose music I also enjoy immensely), but Frankie wasn't gunned down by a deranged psychopath in front of his home at 40 years of age. Perhaps that has something to do with the outpouring of emotion since the time of Lennon's assassination. What might have been?
Who cares about John Lennon? He was just some nutty music player who was so high on dope he thought he could somehow... bring peace to the world. All those sixties war-protesters and peace activists were just deranged lunatics in my opinion. But judging from the outpouring of grief from most of you over his death, I'll probably get flamed to death for this(reaching for asbestos suit). Regards, CraigG
Jimmy Durante was an actor/singer, Alfred Hitchcock a writer/director, Jesse Owens a runner, and Colonel Sanders gave us some pretty good fried chicken. And no, I didn't Google any of them. You'll have to try a little harder OldDan! :smile I remember hearing about Lennon's death on the radio. I was 14 years old. My best friend's mother complained to me that now all we'd get to hear for the next month would be, "Beatles, Beatles, Beatles."
