Again I must ask why all this anti French rhetoric?? Please remember that riots are not a nice thing and should not be mocked. Peoples lives are at risk here, Would you appreciate it if it where your country?? The French as a whole are very nice and friendly people (ok I do like the French Goverment) and would much rather be without this problem. De Orc
The French stick it to the United States at every opportunity, and they have been doing so with obvious malice since about 1940.
Might it just be possible that they aren't liked as much as you and the country of France think they are? We didn't think they were funny when we had them in California a few years back, and were told by the French government that we didn't know how to handle such situations. They were a much older nation and had all the right answers at that time, it seemed. The people of france are a bunch of sheep, and will follow any body that will promise them an easy way of life. As for the French Government, they simply can't be trusted. 90 years ago, 60 years ago or NOW! So you say there is a problem. Well, let them fix it, they have all the answers and should know how to do such a simple thing as stop a riot by teenagers.
I have visited France several times, and never felt unwelcome there. But then I speak some French, but with an accent. I enjoy the country, the people, the culture, the food and drink. I guess I really enjoy so many different things about all the different places I have been in Europe. For instance there are things in Denmark that I like better there than in France, but things in France I like better than Denmark. I have been to many countries in Europe and Asia, and not been in one I did not yet like. I don't understand this love hate thing between Americans and French. De Gaulle really did not care for the USA, but the French people as a group always liked America. Jacques Chirac has been slammed for his alleged anti-Americanism, but if you really knew him you would appreciate that he lived in America and loves that country very much. Gees, he even fell in love with an American girl when he lived there.
I would suggest that you visit France, talk to the people and ask them what there opinion of America is, you might be mildly suprised to say the least. So far you have talked of Goverments can you honestly say the Goverment of the United States has never done anything wrong?? I am talking about the people who do not deserve your scorn, you complain that other cultures & peoples disrespect you as a people and yet here you are doing the self same thing. over the years I have spent a great deal of time in many countries and found that the ordinery folks are the same the world over, so please could you treat others with the same respect you wish to be treated with. I think it would be interesting to poll some typical Americans. I'll bet that of all the foreign nations in the world, France is the least popular in the United States. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that Americans have a higher regard for Russia and Vietnam, two former advisaries, than France.
Quite possibly amongst Americans that might well be true, but so far no one has told me why you have this sudden anamosity towards them Ok so they stayed out of the gulf war so what, They sold Missiles to Argentina during the Falklands conflict but I dont hate the French people for that. How do you feel about the following countries Cuba?? man you cant even buy Cuban coins legaly LOL then we have Iran, Saudi (Worst enemy of the western world in my opinion), N. Korea!! All I am and have been saying is please dont treat the events in France as some kind of game, how will you feel if US Citezens are caught up in it and injured/killed?? It is a very volatile situation at ther moment. De Orc
I don't think any American will ever say our Government is perfect, just the opposite in most cases. Do you mean the innocent French people who were protesting with anti-American posters and burning U.S. flags in public? I think Americans as a whole are just fed up with the entire world constantly reminding us. We hear it every time we turn on the TV or open a newspaper, some country slamming our govt., our world policies, our people, our way of life, our treatment of others, our dogs, our cats, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.. Then something happens, be it natural or man-made and something on the planet needs fixed. Who do they come crying to (unless it happens to the U.S., then they all just cheer)? And if it isn't done just the way they expect, out come the stones again as usual. U.S. bashing is just a constant way of life anymore and I think we are just used to it, but switch the role and everyone thinks it's terrible. A true friend or ally will stand by your side even when they may not want to. France, like a few others, turned their backs when we needed their help or just their support. They all agreed that Saddam needed to go, but someone else was going to have to do the dirty work. We are told that we should forgive, maybe so, but I hope the American people will never forget which friends showed up and stood beside us and which ones hid and threw stones when we needed their support as usual. I hope croissants make good kindling! Maybe terrorists will consider France neutral allies and all move there.
Something to think about... Long before Al Qaeda planned on flying aircraft into the WTC, an Algerian terrorist group planned to hijack a French airliner and fly it into the Eiffel Tower. As a percentage of it's population France has a much larger Islamic minority than the USA Al Qaeda has threatened French interests because of the Head Scarf in the school row. After the USA and Britain, France is next in line for the terrorists to go after. If you think these whackos in the middle beast like France, think again. The current uprising is proof of that.
I have to agree with Krasnaya about the French Situation in regards to Terrorist threats, and I have seen at 1st hand the disruption when another bomb scare is anounced on the Euro Star. As for protesting hell you had it in every country going including the UK and US, Tony was burned in efergy as much as Bush LOL but who worries about that? Just a bit of street theater Now on to your comments about 'unless it happens to the U.S., then they all just cheer' that my friend is quite untue. I can assure you that there was no mass cheering in the streets of France or the UK or Germany after Septemper the 11th or Katrina except by a few insane so called Muslim's. nor were there after the London Bombings nor the Madrid Bombings. The US is not the only target for these lunatics you know, we here in the UK have lived with terrorists threats for years as have most of Europe. De Orc
If it weren't for France in 1781 everyone west of the Mississippi would be currently speaking Spanish (Mexican) and the majority of city parks would have statuary lamenting those who gave their lives in the Boer War, and Flanders Fields. I don't think even with the Allied liberation of France in WWII we still have paid the debt in full that we owe to Messrs Lafayette and Rochambeau at Yorktown.
Do me a favor and learn exactly who the French were helping and why in 1781. You might start back in 1756 when the French paid big bucks for white scalps to their Indian allies to over run the Ohio valley and all the way to New Orleans. The British kicked their asses then (with colonial help) and from that day on the French was trying to get even with the British. Read up on the French and Indian War of1756 to1763. Oh, and you forgot we also pulled them out of the fire during WWI, so by now I guess we have earned the right to choose our friends and tell the French to go to hell. At least in my book we do. Now if you owe them anything, I suggest you offer to go to France and help them with their riots. The only friendly thing to do, don't you think?
Well Dan being the fine judge of motives that you are, and I am sure that yours are always admirable. I think you'll find the first couple generations of Americans were very thankful, not to mention a large number of Europeans who made this country their home, I know my ancestors sure appreciated it. If you want to recite history you'll find that HRM King George III used those very same few indian mercenaries to do his dirty work also. Although we showed them, paybacks are hell right? As for World War I and II, I think nobody back then thought anything more than the horrible tasks that needed to be done. The U.S. that I know was damn proud to fight and be part of the side of freedom. I know my ancestors didn't give their lives to "pull anyones ass out of the fire"
And that is worse??? From what I have observed, the Hispanic population aren't afraid to risk their lives and fight for what they consider a just cause. Just look at the military rosters and the names.
Um, that is an elementary school description. A more indepth look would show. The British Banks were loaning money to the American Uprising. The British people were not for that war. They were not kean on cousins shooting cousins. As that war progressed, British and Hessian soldiers were deserting to live here. We would have won that war regardless of the French Navy. As for the Lousiania Purchase. If Napoleon did not sell it, it would have been setteled anyway by the American's pushing everward westward in those days. The war of 1812 showed the British that the United States was here to stay and was going to expand no matter what. That was the whole borderline fort issue was about. As for Lafayette, give me a break. He was a tent officer who liked to eat and talk with George Washington. We had Prussian and Polish field officers assisting with the training of the army and we had our own type of warfare with the then best sharp shooters of the world.
