Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) says he believes the United States “will be going back into Afghanistan” despite the recently declared end of nearly two decades of American military presence in the country.
Graham, in an interview Monday with the BBC, predicted a looming clash between the Taliban and extremist groups such as the Islamic State would necessitate American military action in the country. “We will be going back into Afghanistan," Graham said. “We’ll have to, because the threat will be so large.”

In regards to sending troops back, it could happen. Then again, with drones and other modern technology, it might just be bombing of select targets and no ground presence (although with no more Bagram, it could be more difficult). Another possibility is that China and/or Russia establish a presence in Afghanistan and then there would be more hesitancy to do anything.

 

That would be the worst...China moving into Bagram AB.

 

I agree it would be bad but it would be very strategic for China and I could see them doing it.

 

How would you have done it?

 

I am not Yakpoo but I’ll chime in on their one. You allow your military commanders on the ground to dictate th actions. In each case, when US conflicts were guided by politicians, the outcome was not to our favor. Politicians should state the goal to their commanders and allow them to do their job to arrive at the outcome.

They did...after Biden told them what resources they would have available. That's what led to the closure of Bagram AB...the military didn't have the personnel to keep it open.
