I have no issue with PUBLIC CCTV's...hence the term, PUBLIC. PUBLIC areas such as train stations, airports, high traffic areas, etc., should be monitored. What would be the differance if you had a cop walking the surveyed area as part of his "beat"??

No city has enough dollars to afford a cop on every corner, so what is wrong with this techinology for PUBLIC areas??

Look...this is the era we live in because of muslim terrorism. These animals only have to be right ONE time, when us infidels have to be right 100% of the time.

So, if a CCTV catches mohammad before he lights a fuse for his allah...I am all for it!

How would a camera stop Punjab from lighting the fuse. With no cops around and someone monitoring from 30 miles away; he has time to light more than one fuse. Now I am not writing about you, because it seems everyone in this chat room is an angel. But if you parked in front of a fire hydrant at three in the morning because right in front of it is an ATM, and you only want 20 bucks, it should take 15 seconds. Two days later, you get a ticket in the mail for parking in a red zone becasue the camera caught you. Did you really desreve that ticket? Yes you broke that law, but a real policeman might have just told you to move the car, or tell you not to do it again.

There is no credible link between surveillance and being able to prevent terrorism. This is a strawman. Terrorism is stopped by good police work and good intelligence, not by tracking every movement of every citizen in the country.

While it may not prevent ALL terrorist acts, it sure helps when tracking the perpetrators down. They are needed in todays crowded world...

There should be no expectation of privacy in public places. That is why they call them public places. ;)

"Public" doesn't mean government owned and controlled where they can do anything they want. I believe the root word for public is the Latin word poplicus, the people. All powers not specifically granted to the federal government by the Constitution are retained by the states and the people.

Why are so many alleged Americans so willing to give up the limited government that their ancestors died for? When did we develop such a lack of self confidence that we need to be 'protected' by government at any cost? When did Americans become cowards?

I have no problem with useing cameras for surveillance in places like airports and other places where people get togeather they are public places. As for the Big Brother issue, there are to many Americans that love our freedom to much to ever let that happen.

I just don't understand why you have a problem with CCTVs in PUBLIC places?? You make it sound that CCTVs are going to be installed in your bedroom!

Sure a camera cannot stop a "true" muslim from lighting his vest full of C4, but it can help identify and track down these animals.

Like I said earlier...it would be great to have a cop on every corner walking his beat and saying hello to the folks...but that is NOT realistic. Much of the benefit of CCTV is from the deterrence value of the system alone and crime has been reduced in the areas where CCTV has been installed over areas free of this deterring factor.

    How about Vegas?

If you are a known cheat and walk into a casino, guess what? YOU are being watched!

If you have a problem with it...STAY HOME!

If you can't do the time, then DON'T do the crime!

Midas, what you can't seem to understand is that the casino is private property and they can do what they want. PUBLIC places do NOT belong to the federal government. You seem confused about that. I know you love the concept of dictatorship because it makes you feel safe and powerful. Most of us don't. You also haven't learned the lessons from the British. Surveilance doesn't stop terrorism. How many times would cameras have aided US law enforcement in stopping terrorism? Answer: NONE. How many time would cameras have aided US law enforcement in tracking terrorists? Answer: NONE. The cameras aren't there to protect you from terrorists. They are there to protect the government from you.

Yes very, but it certainly explains a good portion of those here that will do anything to get a tiny bit more security at any cost real or imagined. Many of the measures taken at airports these days don't do squat to enhance the safety of airline travelers but the perception of safety is accepted as a substitute. As long as the illusion of safety is maintained, whether it be ridding passengers of toothpaste tubes before they board planes or attaching cameras to the top of telephone poles, we will continue to go about our lives and do as we are asked without question. The next king we elect can stand on top of a pile of rubble leftover from the next terrorist attack and proclaim that he or she will make those responsible pay for this atrocity while our foreign policies continue to aggravate and inflame the lunatics of the world.

Well having read this thread I can only give my view, which is honestly you don't even notice them, yes they could be used to control the population more there is no doubt about that but then you stray into the realms of paranoia LOL after all if you have a credit or debit card, Mobile phone, you can be tracked:smile
One thing I have noticed is the drop in street crime were cameras are situated, they can also be used to monitor traffic flow and the movement of crowd's. On Oxford St, in the centre of London they are used to track suspected shoplifters & pickpockets (Good or bad thing)?
No they wont stop terrorist attacks but they were used to help trace the movements of the July the seventh bombers and could have picked up any contacts that they made.
The Met police actually have portable units (Vans) in action and they will deploy at things like soccer matches & protest meetings were they are expecting trouble and also at trouble spots on a friday/satarday night LOL
They have been used over here to stop and id those who have desecrated cemeteries & synagogues, they have helped to cut down on vandalism.
I have no problem with them at all :smile but there again I dont worry about phone tapping either LOL

I went down through this thread and noted who was opposed to this survellance camera kick, and decided to go down to the road into my property and put a couple of cameras up on top of the poles on each side of the trail into the place. Sure hope they get noticed, and that way I won't be bothered with having to dispach unwanted guests.
