Well one of the guy's to blame was my own Mr Churchill & Lord Mountbaturn, they authorised the rearming of the defeated Japanese forces in Vietnam to be used as a Police force until the French could reestablish full controll. I do believe that when Ho held his victory march in Hanoi at the end of the war his podium was shared by American Officers, a number of Americans served with his forces in the fight against Japan the US supplied him with wepons & training. At that time he was quite pro America as I believe he looked upon then as Revolutionary brothers in arms.

Politics and war make strange bedfellows. For example in the 1980ths USA support and arm Saudi businessman wealthy, in quest to "liberate" Afghan Republic from USSR forces. USSR forces leave Afghan Republic and it fall to forces allied with Saudi businessman, then they wage terror campaign against "infidels" of west. Maybe they should not have supported Bin Ladin, but old saying goes "You reap what you sow".

The politicians responsible for betraying the Vietnamese and returning Indochina to French colonial rule? Well, the list would have Harry Truman right at the top, with Churchill and Mountbatten from the Brits (as DeOrc mentioned) and of course Charles DeGaulle of France. I've never been able to figure out exactly WHY that decision was made to betray our allies in their quest for democracy. Most explanations say that we felt sorry for the French because they had been so ravaged by Nazi occupation, so we wanted to do something nice for them. But "doing something nice" is seldom the motivation for international policies. Since France was given a permanent seat on the UN Security Council (with the power of veto) it may well be that they threatened to veto something we wanted very much if we didn't concede Indochina. But what exactly the blackmail threat was I have never been able to ascertain. Whatever it was, I hope it was worth the loss of over 50,000 of our sons and daughters and the loss of a great swath of Southeast Asia to Communism. It was a huge price to pay.

Thank you Tom for your straight forward answer, without trying to put any 'spin' on the naming of names. You may be right on the appeasment if France. I haven't researched this area and therefor can not add any light on the subject.
    Again, thank you!
