As many may have seen or heard on the recent news, radio Shock-Jock Don Imus was suspended by both MSNBC and CBS for disparaging remarks directed towards the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team. Do you think the two week suspension is appropriate or not. What are your feelings on the topic?
Well, as the Don Imus of CoinTalk, as you labeled me, I first had to figure out just who he was. Apparently, he is some local shock-jock guy that I've never heard of. I guess that kind of radio comedy appeals to others but I find it kind of boring. I can't really comment on the controversy but I'll do my best to live up to your label. I think he wears a stupid cowboy hat and rides a motor cycle...Hey! Are you really the Don Imus of CoinTalk Bone? :thumb:
Its called free speech, and if you punish him for it, soon everyone will have to guard their thoughts. I've never been a fan of Imus but he has the right to say what he wants without inciting violence.
The interesting part of this situation is that any number of black Rap groups can sing unbelievably derogatory things about black women and black kids will snap their recordings up faster than they can produce them. Then, you'll see these same groups out on stage thanking Jesus for their success and nobody makes them apologize for calling black women Ho's, be-aches, and getto sluts. But, when a white guy, uses the very same language coined by these rappers in the context of a comical radio program , he must apologize to everyone that has recently spent too much time in the sun. I don't think either Rappers or Imus should be disparaging black women but the double standard in this country is only hurting the cause of basic respect for black women. I think a lot of opportunistic has-beens have jumped on the Imus hating boat and the worst of them is Al Sharpton. Remember when he jumped on the Tawana Brawley boat and it turned out to be untrue. Sharpton is just a publicity hound and he found a new cause. http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=tawana brawley&gwp=13
"My goal is to goad people into saying something that ruins their life." -Don Imus That is what the a-hole said so let him choke on it
Imus did about all he could to apologize. The reaction by the Rutgers womens basketball team after their meeting with him will probably decide his fate. Freedom of speech is, of course, a basic right in this country; but you have to remember that he made the comment at work, and his employer also has the freedom to determine what the employees of the company can and can't say on their network. In similar circumstances, my employer would certainly fire me for making a similar public comment that reflected badly on their business and negatively impacted their revenue stream. They have rights too.
Don Imus didn't say anything that you can not hear on BET on any given night of the week and I am not talking about rap videos or black comics, just the basic shows. Don Imus has been a shock jock for over 25 years now, he was before Stern and nobody ever said anything when he attacked the catholic church, christians over all, jews, made white sterotype jokes, gay jokes etc, in fact the group he least attacked was the black community. I just find it disgusting that people like Spike Lee who has made a racial movie promoting riots, forgot the name, and another movie called "White Men Can't Jump" is on TV acting like a saint and talking against anyone. I just find it disgusting that people like Al Sharpton who had made comments to burn down a sneaker store in Harlem for it was not black owned, and most likely not paying out to him, is on TV at all since that sneaker store, Freddies, was then burn down by Sharpton's mob and a number of spanish teenagers who worked there, burned to death in broad day light and filmed by TV newscrews, so the footage is there. Never mind that Sharpton helped sparked the Crown Heights riots. I find it disgusting that any body would associate with these two men be it the talk news shows or democratic conventions. by the way, I never really was a Don Imus fan but he does run a camp for sick kids regardless of color, religion or sex, more then anything Spike Lee or Al Sharpton ever done for thier own communities which they claim to be advocates for.
They fired him right before his fund raising campaign was to start for kids with medical needs. Yeah, CBS and MNBC has a real heart. Funny also how the left wing media gave more coverage to this by far and practically ignored the three Duke players who were found not guilty by the evidence that the legal system of the State of North Carolina had and in which that local district attorney ignored, suppressed, and did not disclose. I guess after the smear campaign against the Duke players, lets face it the leftwing media from day one protrayed them as guilty and another example of "what is wrong with white america", they saw the Don Imus story as a way to distract people from the Duke story which is by far the more importent issue of the week, never mind the day.
We have even heard about this on the news over here. The whole issue has raised calls for offending lyrics in songs to be banned, especially when the lyrics are sexist & racist. Don Imus has been given the boot,& his reputation has been tarnished. Aidan.
I love the fact that one of the rutgers players is "scarred for life" by the things a 60+ yo white man said. But the duke players, abandoned by their school, drug through the mud by the da, media, and police, are undeserving of an apology. Mike Nifong ought to go to jail, along with the stripper that accused them.
