How many smokers do we have out there? I just mean cigarettes not the other stuff. Why did you start and what do you get out of it? Are you afraid that you'll be judged if you admit that you smoke cigarettes? Anybody want to light up this post? :thumb:
After 14 years of smoking I quit 2 weeks ago- I still think about lighting one up at LEAST 15 times a day - alot less than the 1st 3 days but still alot. I was the hardest & in some way the easiest thing Ive done. One day I just woke up & said Im done & stopped , but the cravings are a KILLER ! Tomorrow will be the big test though with a 7AM wake up call to start drinking KEGS & EGGS for St. Patty's day ! Gosh I loved smokin' & drinkin' , but I wont do it- (the smokin')
I use to smoke some 15 years ago and other than one slip when they took me into hospital and insisted that I still smoked I havn't done to bad LOL I got so worked up on discharge started again for 2 weeks, went in with a cracked rib and they decided 1st off it was a heart attack then lung cancer due to the heavy non smoking LOL De Orc
My Wife smokes.... I've been trying to get her to stop for over 10 yrs... Maybe she will stop if she gets Cancer.... Maybe... Hopefully, she doesn't get it thought... I would not wish that on anyone, not even in a joke... Lets list the Pros & Cons of Smoking.... Pros Some say it relaxes them some say it tastes good? Then there is the Marlboro Man, Wait, he died of Cancer.... Maybe that should be a Con.... Cons Lung Cancer Heart Disease Face Wrinkles Smelly Fingers Stinky Breath Stinky Clothes Yellowed Teeth Kisses taste like crap Expensive Burnt Holes in stuff I dunno, it looks like a tough descision....
I smoke about 2 packs a day. I grew up with advertising for cigarettes, but I smoke because I am addicted. I work outside (Tree Climber) so there are no restrictions at work. I quit once for 3 months, then my wife told me she was pregnant and i started again, not sure if the two are related. I probably should quit. Wish it was easy to quit. Well, it's easy to quit, but hard to quit for more than a half hour. Kirk
Never smoked, well one time in high school to see what it was like. Yuk. I have ridden intercontinental flights since childhood, and there was a time in the 70's and 80's when smoking was OK on any flight except the hops less than 1 hour. I cannot describe what a torture that was, sitting for 9 hours in the 'non smoking' section of the plane while the evil fog drifted at will. At least in a bus it is possible to open a window. To this day I have no comprehension of how a smoker can justify lighting up in an enclosed space with other people who aren't so keen on doing the same thing to their own bodies. Its offending. Apologies for ranting.
I smoke...I plan on quitting soon because I am having a kid...I dont smoke a lot..maybe 5-10...having to go outside to smoke made me cut down.
I have never smoked but my mother smoked for 55 years. So I guess I kind of second-hand smoked for the first 18 years of my life. My mom tried everything from hypnosis to the patch to quit smoking and nothing seemed to help. Right around her 74th bithday she smoked her last cigarette. The ultimate cure turned out to be lung cancer in her case. Out of the nine children she had about half of us smoked or still smoke. I guess if you want to pass something other than your coin collection on to your children, let them see you smoking regularly as they grow up, they'll get the idea sooner or later. Now I just have to wait for half of my brothers and sisters to join my mom as we age. Cigarettes are the only drug I can think of that have no benefits. They don't get you high, they don't make you hallucinate, they don't make other people look more attractive to you, and they don't even feed your ego. The only thing they do is addict you to nicotene and then feed that addiction. There are no direct or indirect health benefits in fact quite the opposite. They don't even help the economy because of the offset medical costs associated with smoking. Any reason these things shouldn't be banned with all of the other drugs that we see fit to make illegal?
I started smoking a pipe (really, don't laugh) after watching the animated film, The Hobbit. I did this for about 2-3 months, but I kept it secret from my folks or I'd have gotten my butt whipped even at 16 yrs old. I would smoke it when running my trap-line or went deer hunting and eventually just stopped all together. Other than that, I never picked the habit up, even in 21 yrs military service. Now, my old man smoked up to the day he died at like 86 yrs old. Ben
All I smoke is cigs these days. LOL. Can't really remember why I started. There aren't really any benefits to it either, except maybe to releive boredom occasionally. My dad has always hated the fact that all 3 of his sons smoked; none of us ever met our grandfather, because smoking killed him pretty young. One of my brother finally quit 8 months ago. I have cut back to where 2 packs last me over a week.
Just quit dude, my little brother quit cold-turkey back in October after smoking for 10 or 15 years and said it was easy. Just have some snacks and gum handy. Good Luck Man Ben
I know. I should just quit. I only smoke while driving, and one before bed. Its just hard to take that last step from smoking just 4 or 5 a day, to quitting completely. It is for me anyway.
I was 18 yrs old, right out of High School....drafted by the US ARmy and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Finished boot camp and went for my infantry training (1972) shipped out to Okinawa for advanced jungle warefare training.....well by then, my nerves were a little tattered so I picked up the habit. Discharged (Honorable) 07-1976 and returned to civilian life....quit in 1978 and have never gone back to it!! Graduated in 1981 from Univ of Texas ( B.S.Biology) and truly discovered how phoenomial our bodies really are! The cig companies know the body chemisrty and have possibly altered the chemical state of the refined tabacco....thus, increasing the addiction factor based on chemical substance. If you still smoke, I encourage you to try and stop! Godspeed in your efforts..:thumb: Rickieb
I've smoked for 35 years, but I'm quitting (on Day Nine in fact). I'd tried patches, gums, cold turkey (did that in Korea, after a week there was a carton on my desk from my flight, guess I was just a bit cranky), none of which worked. This time, the doc prescribed Chantix, supposed to help with the brain chemistry to reduce or eliminate the cravings. Seems to be working, I only had a couple yesterday, and I haven't wanted one yet today.
I smoke and don't care who knows it, I'll quit when I get tired of it, the tree huggers make it illegal, or make it so expensive it's like buying illicit drugs
I smoke. I started when I was 14 and did it to be social. I continue to do it because I'm addicted to smoking (both nicotine and the habit) and I don't have enough will power to do it on my own. I need to be forced to quit, like stranded on a desert island for a month. I hate smoking. It tastes bad, makes me smell, makes me look older, stunted my growth, and tons of other nasty things. I have an oral fixation now. If I'm not smoking, I'm chewing on pens, my finers, or eating all the time. Oh, and it makes me broke.
It's interesting that this was put under the "politics" category instead of "general discussion." Oversight or statement?
