Who are the worst 20th Century American Presidents? Pick only two. Will disclose my choices later, and why.
LBJ and Carter by far, from the list given. However, from the title I thought I would get to throw my Carter vote over to Herbert Hoover instead. I think what distinguishes these presidents the most as being bad is their total disconnect from what was happening in the real world at the time (especially Hoover). I would say that Carter has been a great humanitarian, but being a president wasn't his forte.
Actually Hoover was the proven humanitarian, by deed, not an endless series of flatulating press conferences. In my opinion, Jimmy Carter was, and still is, a sort of self-righteous gadfly. He almost single-handedly served up the Islamic Revolution that we must live with today. I think he is clearly the most disconnected American President in the entire 20th Century. Woodrow Wilson was an idealist like Carter, but smarter and not as destructive.
In this era, I think Reagan is the best, although my all time favorites are Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. You could make a case about any of them as bad. Truman - What was his plan to get us out of Greece when the British dumped Greece in our laps? Eisenhower - Just rode the wave of 1950s America, and didn't really do anything. Kennedy - Berlin Wall, dope addict, skirt chaser Johnson - Vietnam Nixon - Watergate Ford - pardon of Nixon Carter - Iran Reagan - spent too much defeating the Soviet Union Bush 41 - didn't continue Reagan's policies Clinton - had 8 years to capture the mastermind behind 1993 attack on the WTC (Osama bin Laden) and didn't Bush 43 - struggles to define his policies Or one could make a case about any of them as good. Truman - Stood up to the Soviets where Roosevelt wouldn't Eisenhower - provided stable leadership at a time when little else was needed (knowing when to shut up for a politician is a big deal) Kennedy - Cuban Missile Crisis Johnson - Civil Rights Act Nixon - "only Nixon could visit China" Ford - pardon of Nixon (it saved America from witnessing the criminal trial of its former President) Carter - Boycott of 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow Reagan - restored to America a confidence lost Bush 41 - the First Gulf War Clinton - the dot-com bubble Bush 43 - we haven't been attacked like 9/11 since, even though other nations have
Ike is underrated. History will NOT be kind to Reagan (many docs still to be released) Clinton will go down as a member of the top 5 club (when the whole story is told) Johnson was a tough SOB, he got things done and messed up bad by not nipping the Vietnam problem in the bud. Bush 41 Really powerful behind the scenes under Reagan did a lot of evil stuff. Bush 43 look at my avatar Nixon- very intellegent yet as dumb as a rock in some ways Ford a couple of good years (can't knock peace) Carter- the most honorable man to hold the office, many powerful evil people opposed him and foiled his plans Truman fell for the Communist boogie man cr*p Kennedy up there with Clinton
I have to question the boycott of the 1980 Olympics as being a good thing. Imagine that you are an athletic sort of person. You find a sport in which you excell in your local area.Your sport is one that has a rather narrow window for peak performance. You work very hard for many years competing at local, state and then national events. You begin to hope that after all the sacrifice and hard work by you and your family you will realize your lifelong dream of representing your sport and your country at the Olympics. Finally you are chosen, you are so happy,so proud you can hardly contain your excitement. Then your President, in a totally worthless and empty gesture, decides to boycott the Olympics. You have trained most of your life to peak in 1980. In 4 years your peak will have past and you can no longer qualify. I'm not an athlete but to make an empty political statement over the dreams of young men and women can't possibly be considered a good thing. Jimmy tops my list. He's a great guy but you have to think about the Olympics, the hostages, the Marielitos ------ Bill
Just going out on a limb here, but are you by any chance a staunch liberal? History already IS kind to Reagan, and he is currently held to be the #1, 2, 3, or 4 President in all of history by a majority of Americans. If Clinton goes down as top five of anything other than womanizer, I'll be VERY surprised. GHW Bush might not have been the brightest bulb politically, but he also wasn't "evil", and GW Bush is certainly not the devil - any more than I am Santa Claus. And Carter being the most honorable man to hold office? Laughable. The reason I think Reagan and GW Bush and to some extent Eisenhower are good presidents comes from their abilities to provide solid leadership in crises and through bad times. Despite what the media loves to report, GWB has done a very good job with Iraq. I'm frankly very surprised that Iraq was able to form a new government - and a semi-stable one at that - in only three years, thanks to the leadership of the United States and Great Britain. Plus, no one can deny that his leadership immediately after 9/11 was exactly what the US needed to get through that crisis. Reagan demonstrated his leadership in sticking with "Reaganomics" even though it was wildly unpopular through his two term presidency, and causing the economy to soar, which I believe is a direct cause of what made the economy do so well under Clinton. .....at least those who are addicted to the crack that he introduced onto American streets. And giving those Iranians missles, Great idea. Basically none of his docs have been released therefore no history can really be written. Further those who write history are the Dems (ha ha). You are in AZ where everyone is a Republican, go to any large metro area (where people are educated) and you will find that NO ONE approves of reagan in the least.
History isn't what comes out in whatever "docs" you supposedly know of that even you say haven't been released. Further, those that write the history are historians, not all of whom are Democrats. Further, my being in Arizona has nothing to do whatsoever with the statistics (even though Phoenix is one of the country's largest cities, and it's heavily Republican), which show that a majority of Americans, including those in Metropolitan areas, consider Ronald Reagan to be one of history's best presidents. But whatever you think one way or the other, I view things my way, and you yours. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Best of luck defending yours. ~AJM
ajm229...I can hear you scratching your head in "disbelief" all the way in here in Florida. Every village has an idiot and this forum is no exception.
Back in mid to late 1990ths American intelligence in CIA had information that Osama Bin Laden was in Sudan. Sudan even offered him to American intelligence in exchange for trade guarantees. Bill Clinton said NO WAY. USA had a chance to get this murderous beast and chose instead to ignore him. This was ca. 1996, then in 1998, USA Navy lobbed cruise missiles into Bin Laden's base in Afghanistan, but he went and snuck into his cave with a wife or two and was saved. This all came to haunt you in 11 Sept. 2001.
In voting for President which was worst for your country, I have to vote for Richard Nixon, this guy was internationally well known crook with lots of paranoia problems. To vote for Carter was difficult, he was lousy president, but great humanitarian who has done much more good outside of presidents office than in it.
That's what happens when you try to appease a jihadist. If you have them in your site, you take them down. Islamic jihadists will NEVER stop and they will keep conducting their jihad until they are either killed (that's a sure ticket to islam paraside) of they kill us. I am a big fan of Churchill. He stated it perfectly: "An appeaser is one (like our village idiot) who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."
I think Bush not really have will to get Osama either, or he would be languishing on pole somewhere. Maybe Mossaad should be hired for the $25 Million Prize to get him. Then you would have him in 6 weeks and not now 5 yrs later he is still taking dumps in cave in Pakistain.
