Ann Romney to critics: "Stop it. This is hard"

(CBS News) Amid ongoing criticism over the management of her husband's presidential campaign, Ann Romney on Thursday responded to the critics in an interview on Radio Iowa: "Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring," she said. "This is hard and, you know, it's an important thing that we're doing right now and it's an important election and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt's qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country," Romney said.

Even as conservative detractors escalate their critiques of how Mitt Romney has operated his bid for the presidency -- conservative journalist Peggy Noonan on Thursday called it a "rolling calamity" -- Ann Romney dismissed the negative appraisals.

"It's nonsense and the chattering class...you hear it and then you just let it go right by," she said. "Honestly, at this point, I'm not surprised by anything."

Amid recent controversies over Romney's response to violence in Libya and comments he made about 47 percent of Americans thinking of themselves as "victims," the Republican presidential nominee has seen an apparent slip in both national and battleground polls.

Ann Romney said Thursday that amid the onslaught of unsolicited advice that has resulted, she opts to offer "peace and calm" to her husband.

"We call the rope line now the advice line," she said. "...because everyone cares and everyone wants to help and everyone wants to just give their peace -- a little piece of advice -- so I feel like my best advice is just to bring peace and calm to him and just trust in him and just say, 'I know you can do it,' but not to give him any advice because it gets too overwhelming."

    I have to quote this:
:D Not the message you want to express when your husband is running for POTUS, eh?

If Romney was a battleship, he just took a torpedo to the lower decks! "Ohhhhh, ayeeeeeeee, right in the oysters!" :D

Maybe she should call Michelle Obama and ask for her advice about how she handled the Right-wingnuts in this country calling her husband a Socialist, Muslim, Kenyan and every other slur they could think up. Poor Ann Romney, are the servants acting up? :p

Now you're just getting dirty. Are you saying its a slur to refer to someone as a Muslim? Or as a Kenyan? I'll agree that calling someone a Socialist is a slur. That's worse than calling someone a whore. But, it isn't libel or slander if its true.

Honestly I figure it is rough for people like Ann Romney and Michelle Obama but I'd also figured they'd know that going into it.

Take major league baseball as an example. The MLB is tougher than triple A.
If you make it to the bigs and stink the park up with your play you'll catch a lot of criticism and get sent back down.

...or like BO, after being elected claiming he didn't know exactly how bad things were (even though he campaigned on the pledge he knew the situation & how to fix it?). Kinda like that?

    Well actually.................

Not at all. My comparison to the situation was much more realistic and on topic.
Seriously. Even using baseball as an example.

Yours was just a predictable attack on our current President with "facts" manufactured in your mind.

I doubt very much if any wife knows what they are getting into when her husband runs for office (Same goes if it is the wife running) and I imagine that the pressure is even worse when running for the highest office in the land.
It must be very hard for any spouse or family member to sit there and read/hear some of the crap that will be thrown at there partner so I for one have no objection to her speaking out about it.
The only couple I can think of who would know full well what to expect would be the Clintons LOL

Not that I recall but I suppose he could have ONCE he got into the White House and was privy to more information.
Following a "fine" President like President Bush could have held some interesting surprises indeed.

Even then if he DID say that (in context hopefully) I sure don't recall him whining about it. Feel free to clarify that for me.

Now back to the original topic.

I'm not here to bash Ann Romney believe it or not. I DO believe she should have been better prepared for the "big dance" though.

I also believe she should have just kept her mouth shut and rolled with the punches as it were.
Considering she was basically lashing out at Republicans it's not real bright in my opinion.

Like it or not I don't think this was helpful to Mitt.

Some might consider it a slur whereas others might consider it a lie. Especially if it IS a lie.

On the other hand calling someone a Socialist that professes to be a socialist or a whore that professes to be a whore is neither a libel nor slander.

All things being equal, Socialist whores are awesome people but, I thought we weren't supposed to mention family members anymore.

Do you really think anybody from the banking industry to the Bush Administration knew exactly how bad and how deep the economic crisis was going to be? Really? How would they have been able to predict that in advance? Just curious why you think someone should have known this type of information and why you think Obama was the guy that should have been able to predict the future? Your arguments are just so lame and contrived merely for political convenience and it really shows.

Ummmm...maybe because BO campaigned on the claim that he knew what our problems were & he knew how to fix them? Oh yeah, your ilk gives him a pass on campaign promises, right? As BO himself said, he never promised he would deliver on 100% of his campaign promises. Nice.

Really? When did he say that AND what president can you name that did deliver on 100% of their campaign "promises"? Can you even think of one? I remember Obama saying that economy was like a huge ship that took a long time to turn around.

And another question: Why should we trust the economic arsonists to prevent another economic fire?

They have no issues with a "fire-sale" since they only care about money...like the little-one here, his lust for rich men's gold has left him blind.

"President Barack Obama said Tuesday he wishes he knew the full extent of the economic crisis when he took office, if only so he could have let Americans know just how tough the coming years would be."

Thanks David. Looks like he did say something like you posted. Not as cut and dried as you put it as I suspected yet at least you provided some backing for a change. That, in itself, is a nice change of pace from you.

Personally, I am not in denial nor do I suffer short term memory loss. This statement was made 9 months ago after all and unlike yourself I am not on a mission to bash our current President on a daily basis.
No more than I need to bash Mitt Romney on a daily basis. He seems to be doing a fine job of that himself. Now his wife is chipping in and I don't think that is helping him do you?

After all that was what this thread was about.

Yeah, no. I'm just not willing to give him a pass that easily
