I can actually understand a lot of what you're saying here Jack but not all.
I own a shotgun for home protection. Some latin gang bangers showing up on my doorstep at 2am several years ago is the reason. A cop that responded to my call actually suggested I get a gun and told me the sound of a shotgun being pumped can be a good deterrent in itself.
    I took his advice.

Should there be big civil unrest, well, I guess I'm vulnerable.

Should "they" come for my gun I suppose they'll get it. Why would I say this?
Simple actually. IF it ever comes to that point I could have a hell of an arsenal but I'm willing to bet theirs would be bigger.

If it's my obligation as an American to defend myself against tyranny I reckon there are different ways of doing that.

Getting filled with lead so "they" can come and get my weapon(s) anyway seems counter productive to me.

Living to fight another day seems more sensible.

Then how come I've never met anyone else that has ever "needed" one? Are we all lucky?

When organizers in the gay community heard of this story, they likely immediately called for non-violence. What they didn't do was say the man wasn't "pro-gay" any time the link was mentioned...unlike what happened with the Sikh shooting.

I have gone my entire adult life without needing to ever use a fire extinguisher. Or an air bag. Or a snake bite kit. Or a GFCI. Or life insurance. ;)

If the wolves we have created in this country decide that you're lunch, a whole houseful of guns is going to do you no good at all. You might just as well spend your life wearing a helmet in the hope that it will protect you if a safe falls on your head.

Just a slight correction here CoinOKC.

I've never "needed" one. I chose to arm myself in case I needed one.

    Hope I never do.

Good, Clembo and I also hope you never do.

I, on the other hand, needed one.

I never "worry" what a dangerous place the world is. I enjoy life on a daily basis. I just want to be prepared for emergencys.
An emergency would be if a drug gang had the wrong house ( my house ) when they attempt to rob a rival dealer. You bet your ass I'll want that semiauto " assualt " rifle with several loaded 30 round mags. It happens in Phoenix almost monthly, at least several times a year.
Another emergency would be a power outtage for several days or more, anything like the national computer system failing......looters. The look alone of an armed person with an AR-15 will DETER the looters.

I have lived thru 2 major riots. Detroit 1967 and Los Angeles Rodney King.

I would rather be armed and never need a gun than need a gun and be unarmed and helpless.

Remember this, When seconds count....The police are only minutes away.

Takij..........Good to know you are unarmed. When " The book of Eli " happens, I'll be the guy taking your food, water and any supplies I might need or want. Sure do hope the woman in your life is hot, I might even be horny. You could always call the cops on your phone that no longer works, or you could try yelling really loud :)

In the mean time, my guns are a hobby. I shoot weekly with the wife. We both have CCW's and shoot both our AR's, our pistols......her a 9mm Glock and me usually a Colt .45 or a S&W M&P 9mm. She does not like my revolvers, they have too much recoil for her comfort, but she knows how they work and and will use one if needed.
Mr Nation, not all my guns are kept at home.

Mr Nation, I have also sent you a friend request on FB :)

Takij.....You do know of course I am only trying to demonstrate what COULD POSSIBLY happen. Is your anti gun stance that firm that you are willing to allow yourself ad your family to be completly helpless in times of trouble or danger? What if you have to eat and theres no food? A gun will get you food whether it be a bird or a dog or cat.

Guns should be enjoyed, and they are an AWESOME store of value. You buy right and you can always sell back for what you paid unlike coins. And if needed ( I hope to never need one ) I want to have that option. Just sayin.

Clembo, I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees. The right to freedom and liberty are two rights I take very seriously. The right to bear arms ensures me those rights.

Thank you, ArizonaJack, you've made my day LOL. That's one of the best B Movie lines I've heard in quite a while. I pretty much understand the thought behind it, but thank you for clarifying it anyway. Thankfully the clarification wasn't really needed on this board, but I've been on boards where it would be. :)

I think one of the safest things I can do is not live in Arizona. Should there be an apocalypse of one sort or another you guys will be killing yourselves for a glass of water and by the time all that's been settled there won't be enough of you left to bother me. Or my man.

I'm not anti-gun. And you don't know whether I currently own one or not. Gotta watch those assumptions. But I don't think I can be called pro-gun. I'm just resigned to them on a societal level.

Now that I'm retired I spend more time on the farm and travelling with my daughter for golf...I couldn't imagine not having the protection of a gun. I don't care if it's a wild animal or a sketchy part of some city I know nothing about, it's irresponsible (and naive) not to properly protect yourself & your loved ones.

It's hard to believe there are actually people who don't have the courage to protect themselves and their loved ones. All I can say to them if they need a gun is "Good luck, pal".

I guess takiji could call the police if he found himself in a position where he needed help..forget the Book of Eli scenario, think of everyday occurences when the police may be needed...but what if he couldn't call or didn't have 5-10 minutes for them to respond?

I've traveled all over the world and lived in L.A., San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Chicago and even taken my kids on safari in Kenya and for some strange reason I have never once wished that I had a gun on me. I just can't relate to this weird paranoia Right-wingers cling to. Carrying a gun can never ever guarantee your safety but it can alleviate at least a small degree of your innate insecurity and fear that would be better off addressed by a therapist rather than a gun.

The response I usually get to these types of personal revelations is that I have been lucky that I have yet to be the victim that they know I’ll be with an implied, up until now. Poppycock! If you have to carry a gun around to feel safe, I feel sorry for you. You have internalized the infinitesimally small chance that you’ll be the victim of a crime to the point where you have actually increased the chances that you’ll shoot yourself or someone you love.

The point is while I have increased the chances that I or one of my loved ones will be the victim of a crime in your opinion, you have increased the chances that you’ll shoot yourself or one of your loved ones in my opinion. I can handle being the victim of a crime if it comes to that but how would you handle shooting one of your own kids or in the case of George Zimmerman, shooting someone else’s kid? I think I’ll take my chances and leave the paranoia to people like you.
