Family Research Council shooting suspect had 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in bag, FBI says

Floyd Lee Corkins II, the suspect in Wednesday's shooting ‏at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the Family Research Council, was carrying 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in a bag when he opened fire, according to the criminal complaint filed by the Justice Department on Thursday.

Corkins, 28, of Herndon, Va., was charged with "interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition"—a federal offense—along with the "intent to kill while armed." The offenses carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for transportation of a weapon, and 30 years for intent to kill. Corkins is expected to make an initial court appearance later Thursday.

According to the FBI affidavit, Corkins' parents said their son "has strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner." According to The Associated Press, Corkins "had been volunteering recently at a community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people."

Corkins legally purchased the handgun he used in the shooting—a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol—in Virginia last week, the FBI said.

A spokesman for the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department said Corkins entered the lobby of the FRC building in downtown Washington at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. He was confronted by a security guard and opened fire.

The guard, Leo Johnson, was shot in the left arm, police said. Corkins was tackled and then taken into custody. Johnson was taken to a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, an FRC spokesman said.

"As far as I'm concerned, the security officer here is a hero," Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Laniersaid Wednesday.

The FBI said it found Corkins with "two additional magazines loaded with ammunition and an additional box of 50 rounds of ammunition," according to Talking Points Memo.

I don't think any of the left-wing nutballs here would consider this guy right-wing. Or maybe they would; who really knows what's going on in their pea brains? I don't know why the guy had 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches with him. He could have been anti-freedom of speech or maybe he was just hungry. Who knows? The article says he volunteered at a LGBT community center and "has strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner". "Strong opinions" indeed! Left-wing opinions? You decide... What a lunatic!

 

I'll tell you what Coin. You post every story that you can of anyone with a Left-wing bent of any kind that walks in and shoots up some place and I'll match you story-for-story with a guy with a Right-wing bent that does exactly the same thing.

I'll bet you my last dollar that you run out of examples, long, long before I ever do.

I think that everyone here would agree that anyone that would walk into any place and start shooting is a nut case. However, I find it a bit strange that you finally decide to post a story about one of these shootings after all the shootings we've had this week alone and all the other high profile shootings we've seen recently because the shooter appears to be motivated by a Left-wing ideology which by the way, never glorifies guns the way the Right-wing does. That is why Right-wing shooters out number Left-wing shooters 50 to 1.

I think that may be one of the major differences between the left (Teddy's left, anyway) and the right. Teddy insists on grouping everyone politically. The right can actually see apolitical or just plain fruit loops in addition to the left or right.

 

You did everything you could dance around the accusation but my offer still stands. Whether he is Right-wing, Left-wing, or no wing at all, he is a nut and should be locked up for a long time.

As I've always said, there are too many guns in this country with too much access to them. The only 100% sure way to get government to keep you from owning a gun is after you have used one in a crime and then it is too late. Look at the policemen that were shot and killed in Louisiana today. They were ambushed with an assault rifle. Who really needs an assault rifle? I'll tell you, NOBODY!

If I had said that all Americans or all gun owners are like this then you'd have a point. But that's not what I said. I said that this is the way America is. Let me be more precise. This is the way it is in America. And it's true. This kind of thing happens over and over again here. This is the way it is in America. To deny that is to deny reality.

And these "nuts" don't necessarily ignore every law on the books. They often follow the ones regarding obtaining firearms and ammunition. And then they use their firearms to do what their firearms were designed to do. So far so good.

Where we have an issue is when the people on the receiving end of these firearms are people who we don't think ought to be in that position. And sometimes we disagree on whether someone deserved to get offed or not. The Trayvon Martin case is one example of that. But most of the time we all come together for a little while in anger and sorrow. And then we move on until it happens again. And then we repeat the anger and sorrow thing. Just the way it is.

 

This is where you're waaaaay off-track. No one can cash in on your "offer" because it's not a valid argument. Your liberal bias is showing when you discriminate by saying that a certain type of person is "right-wing" or "left-wing". A person's desire to own a firearm isn't "right-wing" or "left-wing". Just as a person's pro or anti-abortion stance isn't "right-wing" or "left-wing". Just as a person's stance on gay marriage isn't "right-wing" or "left-wing". These are value judgements that have no political basis whatsoever. You've pidgeonholed certain people by stereotyping them into "right-wing" or "left-wing" political stances.

Four yoiung "men" got into a house in the county over from where I live.
Beat a lady up for a safe combo. Apparently there were guns and coins in the safe. They had a "tip".

A neighbor noticed. When they left he followed them into the county I live in. He kept police informed as to where they were.

They ended up crashing the vehicle (into an FBI vehicle amongst others) THEN the foot chase took off. One of of the four suspects fired a few shots at an FBI agent before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide.

The other three were captured after they had tried to hide themselves in various retail stores. We're talking strip mall territory here.

The roads there were closed, multiple law enforcement agencies were involved. The only guy that suffered a gun wound was the neighbor. Shot in the hand. (and the suicide of course).

This was about five miles from my house. I had no idea it was going on.
Yesterday we bought a TV in that same strip mall.

Old news now. Never mentioned but it's been about a week.

What does that really say?

I've never been anti gun but to me it says that is how America is.
It really depends on where one lives of course, but for many Americans that really IS how it is.

By "dead policemen" I presume you mean the police officers who give their lives protecting our rights. It's a little late to ask them, but I believe they would agree that freedom is not free.

We know you'd love to abolish the Second Amendment. Are there any other rights you'd like to dispense with while you're at it? How about the First Amendment? Or the Fourth? You might as well gut the whole Constitution and start over.

I own several AR-15's.....they are NOT for " personal protection ", they are too powerful, they penetrate house walls and apartment buildings. The AR comes in handy during times of civil unrest. A semi automatic handgun with hollowpoints is for personal protection. Or a shotgun.
I live in Phoenix AZ. Hotbed of drug gangs and home invasions.
Have any of you here seen footage of the LA riots? ( I WAS in LA during the riots ). Katrina, when they came and confiscated guns from citizens?
An AR-15 is for when they come for your guns or in case of civil unrest. It is your OBLIGATION as an American to defend yourself against tyranny.

 

Jack, you're one of the few people that have actually articulated why you feel the need to have so many weapons in their home. I certainly don't agree with your reasons but at least you have the courage to say why you have the them. I have had the courage all of my adult life to live without guns. And that is my explanation for my position. To each his or her own.

How can you live a normal life when all you do is worry about what a dangerous place the world is and spend your energy trying to protect yourself from everything?
