I think you're talking about the Dixiecrats, actually. A long time ago they decided they didn't like the way the Democratic party was starting to coddle uppity n*ggers and coming out against segregation. The Dixiecrats ended up finding a more congenial home in the Republican faction, which did not have a problem with their racist attitudes and reached out to them in the wake of Lyndon Johnson's successful civil rights initiatives. The Southern theocrats and racists remain a key supporting element of the Republican faction today.

FWIW I believe that even "respectable" RW journals such as NR supported the pro-segregationist newly-minted Republican voters under the guise of defending state's rights and by asserting that it was up to the South to change organically on its own (i.e. never).
