I just heard an interesting statistic. I don't have a link to it but I'm sure you can find one. Apparently, for-profit colleges account for 12% of the schools out there. They also account for 50% of the student loan debt. They also have aggressively sought as much of the VA money that has been the result of a lot of our troops returning home from the two wars with government education funding in tow. Interesting how the for-profit motive once again is a huge factor in driving up costs just like in the health care system. Now let's go out and screw the Constitution and privatize the post office too.

When the gov't is willing to subsidize college tuition the schools have ZERO motivation to keep the cost down....healthcare will be no different

What a pathetic hypocrite you are. When other posters begin a statement with these words you attack, attack, attack and your ward chimes in.

You couldn't have said it more incorrectly if you didn't know what you were talking about....which you apparently don't. The "government" and we are talking state governments here, have successfully funded land grant universities in their states for over a century. They own the land, the buildings, and everything else nail down. For the longest time tuition was free in places like California or in other places for a nominal charge. Education was seen as a benefit to society and rightfully so. An educated population was a prosperous population by all statistical measures. States knew that having educated citizens would make their states prosper.
In the 1960's, RW'er mostly, realized that college campus' were hotbeds of liberal thought and activism not to mention created people that didn't buy the parent's religious dogma through teaching people to think for themselves. While the Right has always had an anti-intellectual bent, the duel forces of establishment authority and religious fanaticism found a common foe...Thinking people, and neither one of them needed that.
Since then, RW'ers have taken every opportunity to cut funding for education at both the state and federal level and weaken the educational system all the time complaining about how bad it is. Education is simply the best investment a society can make in its people but we invest in things like war instead. Costs involved in the public educational system are primarily salaries. Salaries are not what you'd call huge among academics nor among academic administrators especially compared to the private sector or the for-profit higher education system. In other words, the investment has a low cost and a high rate of return.
This brings us back to the statistic I previously posted. For-profit higher education institutions account for 12% of the schools and they account for 50% of the student loan debt. So how is that privatization model working out for the students that are droning in debt? I'd say public school are the good guys here and the for-profit schools seem to be incentivized to rip kids off.

The definition of a pathetic hypocrite is someone that supports Republicans and complains about student loans. Republicans want to raise student loan interest rate. You're a hypocrite plain and simple as is your presidential nominee. He also didn't support the student loan interest rate extension until it polled against him. You're all bloody hypocrites.

I've said it before but it bears repeating: The right has a limited time left. In fact, the fracturing has already begun.

As more people become more aware of the right's behavior, they will begin to remove it's influence from society. It may not happen in my life-time, but as knowledge grows, so does opposition to those causing society the most harm.

As JN said, this process ramped-up in the 60s, and the movement has continued ever since. The right's counter is to create hostility towards higher education, by increasing the costs and putting hardship on students, but that is a losing strategy. Knowledge will see to that.

In truth, the right will always have supporters, but it's intentional damage to society, especialy since the 60s, assures that it will eventually lose the power it now holds. They'll eventually have no one else to blame but themselves, which they won't of course lol

    My opinion anyway ;)

Well, I like your opinion IQ! Having said that, I don't believe that the RW's intent is to damage society. They are far too wrapped up in greed and self-interest to think that long-term. In other words, they are just too damn interested in their short-sighted goals of gimme, gimme, gimme to care or even consider the ramifications for society in general. Greed has only three goals that drive everything. More! MORE! and MORE!

What you very conveniently and very typically failed to mention is the poison pill that that Rethugs placed in the bill regarding how the low interest rates are to be "funded". I guess either you didn't know about it because it wasn't included in the what-to-post memo you got from your leaders or you deliberately left it out. Either way, all you've accomplished here is to prove yourself once again a brain dead RW shill.

Poison pill? You mean like something to keep us out of Greece-ification? I do not get it. We are so far in debt now recovery is becoming questionable, but you still want to spend more?

So...exactly what is this "poison pill" you refer to?

Are you seriously that brain-dead? Are you intentionally ignoring the reality of the Republican's position so that your ideology can survive the truth of the matter? You know EXACTLY what the poison pill is and you conveniently pretend that it doesn't exist. Well, for those that may actually not know, it is rather simple to figure out. It is simply another attack on women even as each Republi-CON leader stands up and says, "This war on women is just manufactured" even while Republican women echo the war on women message openly.

"On Friday the House voted on a bill to keep some student loan interest rates at 3.4% instead of raising the interest rates to 6.8% for 7.4 million students. The battle ensues because Republicans are agreeing to keep interest rates low, but want to pay for it by cutting 6 billion dollars from the Prevention and Public Health Fund which helps women get breast and cervical cancer screenings. Poor women at that"

Oh, but what is wrong with wanting to pay for the money you would have taken in from the higher loan interest rates on students? Well, there are a gazillion programs that could have been targeted to off-set the cost of not fleecing students but for some reason, the Republicans chose women's health. Surprise, surprise! No war on women? Says who?

Wouldn't that expense be covered under BO's healthcare legislation?

The Prevention and Public Health Fund IS part of Obama's health care law. Republicans are just trying to bleed the fund dry at the expense of women's health.
