Apparently the latest fad in pets is tortoises. You can Google them and find any number of sites that will sell you a young tortoise and ship it to you for about $150. Sounds relative benign on the surface until you realize that the life span of some of these pets is 250 years. Any thoughts on what one might do with one of these pets when you die, or your children die, or their children die......? By the way, I don't think Shelly tastes very good either.
For a pet that will last for 250 years $150 is a real bargain, which I find a bit amusing. When I was kid, we used to live in Florida and my brother came home one day with a snapping turtle. My mother hit the roof. They can be possibly be donated to the zoo or you can let them loose in the wild. Don't just dump them without making a few phone calls.
I first heard about that a few months back when listening to a talk radio show. The vet on the show apparently has tortoises. The first thing I thought was 'I don't want a pet that is going to outlive me by 200 years. ' Plus, I think they would be about as exciting as a houseplant.
I suppose they'd make great pets for Vulcans. Get one for your pointy eared friend as a child and they could spend a life together.
