Only Newt could fail to collect enough signatures to be on the primary ballot in his own state and blame the system, a well-known system that hasn't changed much or significantly that anyone can remember, and not find fault with himself. The Gingrich campaign responded that "only a failed system" would disqualify Gingrich and other candidates. It said Gingrich would pursue an aggressive write-in campaign, although state law prohibits write-ins on primary ballots.
In Newt's mind this is on the level of Pearl Harbor. Even Faux News thinks he's full of it. Quite an achievement in view of the fact the most RW cranks end up on the Faux payroll. http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2011/12/26/gingrich-compares-virginia-ballot-fiasco-pearl-harbor
Newt is a blight on the American political scene. However, his egoism is match by Obama, who apparently believes himself to be the fourth-greatest American president. Other politicians have made similarly bizarre claims during their candidacy or tenure of service. There is no shortage of egos being boosted in either party.
I am a bit older then I used to be and not in tune as I once was so I do not keep up with what is as I once did. With that said, I seriously do not think Newt is running for President to win. I think if it happens it is just a bi-product which he has no end game for, no vision, no real platform other then political speak. Lets face it. Running for President can make alot of money for certain people these days. Newt can increase his speaking and apperance fees afterwards as the voice from the right. He can perhaps get a book deal. He can make more money as the conservative voice on Fox. And let us not forget, he will get perks from lobbiests to transfer the message that they want him to boardcast during all of this. Without being in tune to anything and with no diagnostic data, I just can't see how a man who has politcal connections around the nation with every republican state machine could not get enough signatures to get on a major state ballot if he really was earnest with this run. The last minute attempt was just to appease the media I think.
I have no sympathy for anyone from the 2 major parties who complains about ballot restrictions considering how hard they fight to keep other parties off of any meaningful, national ballots.
I've heard other people talk about this on radio talk shows and I agree. I don't think Newt ever really believed he'd have a snow ball's chance, but so much went wrong with so many that he almost fell into the lead. I think this was all mainly for publicity, possibly another book, and he never intended to be THE candidate. I wouldn't be surprised if they purposely screwed this up so he could have a reason to get out. It is quite the 'oversight'.
Leave it to a Republican to pretend to run for President just to make a few more bucks. Pathetic loser.
Just like a Republican to copy someone else's ideas... pathetic... but then again you're Republican so it's a given you'd be pathetic.
