Occupy Wall Street Protesters Heckle Michelle Bachmann

I thought it was extremely rude for the Occupy Wall Street protesters to interrupt Michelle Bachmann's speech in Charleston, SC.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with the candidate's position, she should be allowed to speak. If they disagreed with what she had to say, they should have waited until the end of the speech to ask questions or voice their opinions.

I have little regard for what Barack Obama (the candidate) has to say, but I would never think of shouting him down like these protesters did to Bachmann. First Amendment rights apply to all, but these protesters seem to have forgotten that.

I agree. Both because I believe in free speech and because more Bachmann speaks the better for our side.

Given what you said about the Bachmann incident, I'd be really curious to have you expound a bit on this incident. I would just love to hear what you have to say about this. This is an elected representative. WOW!!

Yes. Very disrespectful. Shades of Town Hall meetings.

First Amendment rights apply to all, but these protesters seem to have forgotten that.

Actually it would seem they've remembered it whether one considers it "right or wrong". They're just exercising that right in a venue that Bachmann didn't choose too well.

Is she still running to be a Presidential candidate or village idiot? I think she has a MUCH better chance at the latter.

    No disrespect intended of course.

Let's see. We have a Representative going out to talk to his constituents allowing free speech and trying to make government as transparent as practical and you have a problem because he got upset at one of your com-padres who has been following him around trying to disrupt his meeting. Yep! It fits in well with your prejudices.

Wait a minute Michele, didn't you call for people to be armed and dangerous? If you felt threatened, perhaps you should think about your words more carefully next time.
"I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back. Thomas Jefferson told us ‘having a revolution every now and then is a good thing,’ and the people – we the people – are going to have to fight back hard if we’re not going to lose our country. And I think this has the potential of changing the dynamic of freedom forever in the United States.”

What's the matter Michele, don't you like this revolution?

I've already stated how I feel about the First Amendment. What's your opinion on the subject?

Wait isn't this the EXACT same kind of behavior the Teabaggers were using a while back? Interrupting town halls? Well no. Not really. I don't think OWS is bringing guns.

Honestly, so the average Republican has a memory of what a single election cycle? That must be the case. It's the only thing that makes any sense. I have a hard time remembering things as well, so I use this trick an old marine showed me. I write things down so I don't forget. Works great! Seriously though, does Fox News broadcast some kind of memory altering frequency
or something? I'm really sincerely confused by this!

I think it’s an interesting contrast between the two incidences. On the one hand you have a group of OWS protesters speaking in unison calmly, methodically, and with little emotion making their point. They are "the people" making their voices heard to an elected representative in the only way permitted. They actually seemed polite especially in contrast to Joe Walsh screaming at his constituents in a very threatening manner and not letting anyone talk as be berates them. And the nonsense he is spewing is incredible. He basically is taking the Heritage Foundation's lie and regurgitating it. The government has never made banks give out one single loan. What they did was banned red lining people so that each individual loan application had to be considered on the merits of that person's situation not their zip code or neighborhood. You cannot find one instance of the government ever reversing a loan denial, force any financial institution ever to loan anyone money. ZERO! Yet Walsh would have us believe it was the government that caused the financial meltdown. What a tool he is.

Seems to me that when people on the Right interrupt speakers they don't approve of, bombard them with questions, and shout them down they say that they are simply exercising their 1st Amendment rights. But when the situation is reversed and those on the Right feel they are on the receiving end then the focus magically shifts and it's suddenly their 1st Amendment rights that are being violated. Kind of a heads-I-win, tails-you-lose approach.

I can't speak for "The Right", but I consider myself conservative. I wouldn't agree with this type of behavior from either side of the political spectrum. It seems as if political discourse in this country is devolving into a shouting match. People who align themselves against freedom of speech should be ashamed of themselves.

Unfortunately, as Tak pointed out, none of you seemed to come to this conclusion during all the Tea Party folks interrupting Democrat town halls by shouting down the speakers. In fact you voiced encouragement of them at the time and so did RW politicians. A little late to jump on the "Let's respect the 1st Amendment" bandwagon at this point isn't it?

For instance, here a recent Democrat event where a Tea Party person shouts over Elizabeth Warren quite angrily. I noticed that you didn't start a post with this video and mention the 1st Amendment. Hum?

Any person reading through this forum and all other political forums will tell you civility is definitely not common.

Although after years of experience in Political forums I can say that it tends to be the people from the right side who most often rely on insult as a form of argumentation.

I have never seen any person or group interrupt someone and be so polite about it. Well, as polite as you can be when you interrupt someone anyway. Contrast that with the Tea Party guy interrupting Warren. Contrast the OWS people with Walsh and you can see where civility is really lacking.

I think that we are having a cold cultural war in this country and who is being obnoxious and who is being polite at this stage pretty much is going to seem irrelevant when the real shooting starts if it come to that.
